Chapter 8 - Fractured Alliances

As the financial pressure mounted, the family began to turn on each other. We learned through a distant cousin that George was furious with Carol. He hadn't realized the full extent of what Carol had done at the airport until Brian spelled it out; Carol had lied to George, telling him Ellie had simply dropped the passport in the car. When George found out Carol had intentionally stolen it out of spite, he was deeply humiliated.

Janelle, too, blamed her mother. With her own lifestyle severely downgraded, she stopped visiting Carol, furious that her mother's petty stunt had cost them their primary source of funding.

One evening, Brian received an email from George. It was the closest thing to an apology we would ever get from that side of the family.

Brian, I am writing to say that I did not know your mother had taken the passport on purpose. If I had known, I would have stopped it. I understand why you are angry. The financial strain here is heavy, but I acknowledge it is not your burden to bear. I hope one day you can forgive us, and that I can see my granddaughter again. Best, George.

Brian showed me the email. "Are you going to let him see her?" I asked.

Brian shook his head. "Maybe in a few years, if he shows genuine change. But right now? Ellie deserves complete peace. He stood by and let them treat her like garbage for years. He only cares now because the money stopped."
