Chapter 3 - The Cold Wake-Up Call

The tropical sun of Cancun was likely just rising when the first crack in Carol’s perfect vacation appeared.
At 7:30 AM, my phone began to vibrate violently on the nightstand. It was Janelle. I didn't answer. A minute later, Brian’s phone rang. He looked at the caller ID, flipped it face down, and continued pouring milk into Ellie's cereal bowl.
"Aren't you going to pick up, Daddy?" Ellie asked, her voice small but curious.
Brian smiled warmly, leaning down to kiss the top of her head. "No, sweetie. Today is all about you. Mommy and I are taking the day off work, and we are going to do whatever you want."
Ellie’s eyes lit up, a glimmer of the vibrant girl we knew returning. "Can we go to the science museum? And get the giant waffles with the rainbow sprinkles?"
"You bet we can," I said, squeezing her hand.
By 10:00 AM, while we were watching Ellie happily interact with a physics exhibit at the museum, the text messages started pouring in. Because their phone lines had been cut, they were forced to use the resort's Wi-Fi to send messages via social media apps.
Janelle: Brian!! Why is my card declined?! I’m at the resort boutique trying to buy swimwear and the front desk says our incidentals card is blocked! Call me NOW.
Ten minutes later, a message from George arrived.
George: Brian, there seems to be a mistake with the resort booking. They are saying the card on file was flagged as restricted. Fix this immediately. Your mother is getting stressed.

Brian read them without a single flicker of guilt. He simply took a photo of Ellie laughing in front of a giant bubble wall and sent it to our personal social media pages with the caption: “The best days are spent with the people who matter most.”
He didn't reply to his family. He let them sit in the beautiful, expensive trap they had built for themselves.
