Chapter 8 - The Trap Springs

Panic finally broke through Vanessa's arrogant facade. Her hands began to shake uncontrollably, and she looked toward the elevator doors as if she wanted to run, but her legs refused to move.

"What... what are you going to do?" she choked out, her voice thin and raspy. "Have me arrested? I'm your mother! The police won't do anything—"

"Arrest you?" I turned back and let out a cold, humorless laugh. "Arrest you for what? Showing up at my office? No, Vanessa. I'm not going to have you arrested. That would be far too merciful."

I walked back to my desk and tapped the intercom button.

"Marcus, send them in."

The heavy mahogany doors clicked open. Two men in sharp dark suits walked into the office. One of them was Marcus, holding a thick leather portfolio; the other was David Vance, my corporate legal counsel and senior partner at Vance & Associates.

Vanessa spun around, her eyes darting between the lawyers and me. "What is this? Who are they?"

David Vance adjusted his glasses, opened the portfolio, and pulled out a crisp, official-looking legal document. He didn't look at Vanessa with anger; he looked at her with clinical indifference.

"Mrs. Vanessa Calloway, formerly Vanessa Miller," David began, his voice deep and authoritative. "As of three minutes ago, legal proceedings have been finalized regarding the recovery of child abandonment damages, unpaid financial restitution, and fraudulent solicitation under state civil statutes."

Vanessa’s knees buckled slightly. She caught herself on the edge of a leather armchair. "Restitution? What are you talking about? I didn't sign anything!"

"You didn't have to," I said, leaning against my desk, crossing my arms. "When Aunt Clara took me in at seven years old, she filed a formal petition of abandonment and state-backed guardianship, documenting every single medical bill, housing expense, and educational cost incurred because you legally vanished without paying a single cent of child support for fifteen years."

I stepped closer to her, my eyes locked onto hers.

"Under state law, child support debt accumulates interest annually, compounded over fifteen years, including legal penalties for evasion and malicious abandonment. Furthermore, your recent attempt to solicit funds by fraudulent misrepresentation under false pretenses in a commercial establishment has been fully recorded by our lobby security and office surveillance."

David held out the document and a pen.

"In short, Mrs. Calloway, every single cent of the modest assets you currently possess—down to the last designer bag, the diamond ring on your finger, and your remaining bank accounts—has been legally frozen by court order to satisfy your outstanding debt to your daughter."
