Chapter 3 - The Ghost from the Past

Fifteen years had passed since the day Vanessa slammed the car door. Fifteen years of absolute silence. No cards, no letters, no phone calls, not even a casual inquiry through distant relatives. In her eyes, I had been successfully deleted from her narrative.

Until a rainy Tuesday afternoon in October 2026.

I was sitting in my glass-walled corner office on the fortieth floor of the Vortex Tower, reviewing quarterly revenue reports with my chief operations officer, Marcus. The rain streaked against the glass, distorting the city lights below into shimmering blurs.

"Eleanor," Marcus said, laying a tablet on my desk. "There's a woman downstairs in the lobby. She’s causing a bit of a scene with security. She refuses to leave until she speaks with you."

"Security can handle it," I replied, not looking up from my screen. "Call building management if she's trespassing."

"She says her name is Vanessa Calloway," Marcus added, his voice dropping slightly, laced with cautious hesitation. "She claims she's your mother."

The room went entirely still. The hum of the air conditioning seemed to vanish. My pen hovered over the digital pad.

For a single heartbeat, the seven-year-old girl inside me shivered on that cold porch. But she vanished just as quickly, replaced by the twenty-two-year-old CEO who commanded a nine-figure enterprise. The shock evaporated, replaced by a cold, clinical curiosity.

"Send her up," I said quietly.

"Are you sure, El?" Marcus asked, eyeing me with concern. "You don't have to face—"

"Send her up, Marcus," I repeated, my voice steady as stone. "Let's see what a ghost looks like in the daylight."
