Chapter 4 - The Ascent

Twenty minutes later, the private elevator chime echoed softly down the executive hallway.

The heavy mahogany doors slid open. A security guard stepped out first, looking apologetic, followed closely by a woman who looked like a walking ghost.

This was Vanessa, but time had not been kind to the glowing bride of fifteen years ago. Her designer coat—once fashionable—was frayed at the cuffs and stained with what looked like coffee near the hem. Her blonde hair, previously styled to perfection, showed heavy roots of gray, pulled back into a tired, loose ponytail. Her makeup was caked on hurriedly, unable to hide the deep, exhausted lines carved around her eyes and mouth.

Yet, the moment she stepped onto the plush carpet of my office floor, a strange transformation flickered across her features. Her shoulders straightened. She smoothed down the front of her jacket with trembling fingers, and a practiced, desperate smile stretched across her lips—the exact same smile she had used to charm the wedding guests all those years ago.

She looked around the sprawling office—at the modern art on the walls, the panoramic view of the skyline, the sleek leather furniture—and her eyes widened with a mix of awe and hungry calculation.

"Eleanor..." she breathed, her voice cracking slightly. She took a step forward, arms half-open as if expecting a joyous mother-daughter reunion. "My sweet baby girl. Look at you. Just look at what a magnificent woman you've become."

I remained seated behind my massive mahogany desk. I didn't stand up. I didn't smile back. I simply rested my hands flat on the glass surface and watched her approach.

"You've grown up so much," Vanessa continued, her voice trembling with manufactured emotion as she stopped a few feet away from my desk. "Do you know how long I've searched for you? Do you know how many sleepless nights I’ve spent praying for this exact moment?"

I let her words hang in the air, tasting their absolute falsehood.
