Chapter 7 - The Tables Turn

Vanessa recoiled slightly as if she had been slapped.
"What... what did you just call me?" she stammered, her voice losing its sugary veneer, revealing the sharp, entitled edge underneath. "Did you just call me by my name? I am your mother!"
"My mother left me on a wet concrete porch with a one-eyed teddy bear while she rode away in a luxury car," I said, my voice cutting through the office with terrifying calm. "That woman told me I was a burden. That woman told me she couldn't start her new life if she dragged me along."
Vanessa’s face drained of color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. The ghosts of her past choices had finally materialized in broad daylight, and they were staring right back at her.
"You... you remember that?" she whispered, her voice trembling, not with sadness now, but with sudden, creeping panic.
"Every single second of it," I replied, walking slowly around my desk until I stood right in front of her. "I remember the cold. I remember the sound of the engine. I remember waiting all night, hoping that maybe—just maybe—a mother's heart wouldn't be as hollow as a stone. But it was."
"Eleanor, please," Vanessa stuttered, stumbling backward a step. "I was young, I was desperate, Martin forced my hand—"
"Don't you dare blame Martin for your own cowardice," I snapped, my voice cracking the silence like a whip. "Martin was a stranger. You were the one who gave birth to me, and you were the one who threw me away like garbage when I inconvenienced your social climbing."
She opened her mouth to argue, to scream, to play the victim once more, but I raised a single finger, silencing her completely.
"You came here today because you're broke, because your rich husband discarded you the exact same way you discarded me, and because you thought you could walk into my life and cash in on the empire I built with my own hands from the ashes of your abandonment," I said coldly. "You thought by dinner, you'd have my fortune."

I turned toward the glass wall, gesturing out at the sprawling Seattle skyline below us.
"Well, you're half right, Vanessa. The room is about to explode. But it's not going to be on your terms."
