Chapter 7 - The Sanctuary of the Threshold

I burst into Chloe's bedroom. She was sitting up in her toddler bed, rubbing her sleepy eyes, looking completely unaware of the terrifying battle raging downstairs.
"Mommy? What's that loud noise?" she asked softly, her voice filled with innocent confusion.
"Nothing, sweetie. Mommy's here. We're just going on a little adventure," I said, scooping her up into my arms and wrapping her favorite pink blanket around her shoulders.
As I turned toward the bedroom door, the wall of the hallway exploded inward. The second cloaked figure stepped through the debris, blocking the staircase. He raised a hand toward us, and an invisible weight pressed down on my shoulders, forcing me to my knees. I hugged Chloe tightly against my chest, shielding her with my own body as the pressure threatened to crush the air from my lungs.
"Mummy, it hurts!" Chloe cried out, burying her face in my neck.
"Don't look at him, baby. Just look at Mommy," I choked out, tears streaming down my cheeks as I tried to crawl forward.
Suddenly, a brilliant flash of silver light filled the hallway. Eleanor appeared from behind the figure, her hands glowing with a blinding, ethereal energy. With a fierce cry, she drove the iron poker straight into the floorboards beneath the Keeper's feet.
A shockwave of golden light erupted from the poker, shattering the invisible pressure holding us down.
"Clara! Take the hatch in the pantry!" Eleanor screamed, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth as she struggled to hold back the Keeper with sheer willpower. "The original seal is beneath the house! That’s where the ledger draws its power! If you reach the center, you can sever the ink permanently!"
I didn't look back. I scrambled down the hallway, clutching Chloe tightly, and raced down the stairs. The living room was a battlefield of swirling red and gold energies. Julian was still locked in combat with the lead Keeper, his body glowing with the living ink that now covered his entire torso.

I bolted past them into the kitchen, threw open the pantry door, and ripped aside the floor mats. There, hidden beneath the linoleum, was a heavy iron storm cellar door etched with the exact same symbols glowing on my hand.
I dropped to my knees, grabbed the iron ring, and pulled with all my might. With a loud, echoing screech of rusted hinges, the doors flew open, revealing a stone staircase leading down into total, cool darkness.
