Chapter 3 - The Dark Inheritance

My father finally reached the edge of the pool deck, his brow furrowed deeply as he looked between Eleanor's shivering form and Julian's panic-stricken face.
"Eleanor, get out of that water right now," my father commanded, his voice carrying the stern authority that had always intimidated me as a child. "What is going on here? Clara, stop screaming and tell me what you're pointing at."
"Look at her ribs, Dad!" I pointed a shaking finger toward Eleanor. "Look at what's on her skin! It's Julian! Her skin is moving!"
My father squinted, stepping to the edge of the concrete. As Eleanor stepped out of the pool, wrapping the oversized towel hastily around her waist, the strange, iridescent sheen on her skin caught the sunlight. My father gasped, staggering backward as if he had been physically struck in the chest. He grabbed the patio railing to steady himself, his face turning an ashen gray.
"God in heaven..." my father whispered, his eyes widening in sheer horror. "You... you brought it back. You brought the mark back into this house."
I spun around to look at my father, completely bewildered. "Dad? You know about this? You know what that is on her skin?"
Eleanor collapsed onto a nearby lounge chair, burying her face in her hands as silent, wracking tremors shook her frame. Julian sank to his knees right there on the concrete, staring blankly at the green grass between his shoes.
"Your stepmother," my father began, his voice barely above a whisper, "came from a family you know nothing about, Clara. Long before I met her, long before we ever crossed paths, her family practiced things that modern science has no name for. Blood pacts. Ancient bindings of soul and essence."
"What are you talking about?" I demanded, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird. "This is the twenty-first century! People don't do soul bindings! This is insane!"
"It’s not insane, Clara," Julian spoke up, his voice dangerously quiet. He lifted his head, and for the first time, I saw an expression on his face that I had never witnessed in all our years together—a profound, ancient despair. "It’s very real. And I was tied to it long before I ever met you."
My breath hitched. "What do you mean... before you met me?"
"Julian isn't just an ordinary software engineer, Clara," Eleanor said, her voice trembling as she lowered her hands from her face. Her eyes were bloodshot, staring emptily into the distance. "Twenty years ago, his family made a covenant with mine to protect a secret—a dark entity that requires a living anchor to stay dormant. When my older brother died, the burden of the anchor fell to me. But an anchor cannot hold alone. It needs a tether."
She slowly pulled the towel slightly aside, revealing the portrait on her ribs once more. The face of Julian was now blinking, its chest rising and falling in sync with Julian’s actual breathing across the yard.
"Julian was chosen to be the tether," Eleanor whispered. "His life force was woven into my flesh when he was just a teenager, long before our paths crossed through your family. When I married your father, I thought I could escape it. I thought distance and time would weaken the bond. But it didn't. It only grew stronger, demanding more of us."

"And Chloe?" I asked, a cold dread washing over every inch of my body as I pulled my daughter tighter against my leg. "Why did Chloe see him? Why did she say Daddy's in there?"
Julian closed his eyes, a single tear cutting a clean path through the dust on his cheek. "Because the bond is expanding, Clara. It's looking for a new host. And children... children with pure bloodlines are the only ones strong enough to inherit it."
