Chapter 6 - The Keepers of the Ledger

The heavy oak front door splintered inward with a deafening crash, showering the entryway with shards of polished wood. Three tall, cloaked figures stepped across the threshold, their faces obscured by deep hoods woven from coarse, dark wool. They moved with an unnatural, synchronized grace, their boots making no sound against the hardwood floor.

"Julian! Eleanor!" I hissed, grabbing a heavy ceramic vase from the counter as I backed away toward the staircase. "What do we do?!"

"Stay behind me, Clara," Julian whispered fiercely, stepping in front of me with his fists clenched. His skin began to shimmer, the exact same iridescent, ink-like texture from Eleanor's ribs spreading across his neck and arms. The bond was reacting, drawing power from the presence of the Keepers.

The lead cloaked figure raised a hand, and the ambient temperature in the house plummeted instantly, our breath pluming into white clouds of vapor in the indoor air.

"The seal has been witnessed by uninitiated blood," a voice rasped from beneath the central hood—a sound like dry leaves scraping across frozen earth. "The veil is torn. The child must be offered to the ledger to restore the balance."

"Over my dead body!" I screamed, raising the ceramic vase and hurling it straight at the lead figure.

The vase didn't even touch him. In mid-air, it shattered into fine dust, pulverized by an invisible barrier of energy that rippled outward from the intruders.

Eleanor stepped forward, raising the iron fireplace poker like a spear. Her face was twisted with fierce, maternal defiance—not toward us, but toward the ancient order she had spent her life running from. "The girl is innocent! You want an anchor? Take me entirely! Absorb the rest of my soul into the ledger and leave my family alone!"

The lead Keeper tilted his head slowly. "An incomplete anchor cannot hold the tide, Eleanor. The husband is tethered, but the child carries the pure, unblemished resonance of the threshold. She is the final key."

"Never!" Julian roared. With a speed that defied human capability, Julian lunged forward, tackling the lead Keeper. As they collided, a blinding flash of crimson light erupted from Julian’s body, illuminating the entire living room in a brilliant, fiery glow.

The other two Keepers raised their hands, chanting in a guttural, forgotten language that vibrated deep within my chest, making my ribs ache and my vision blur.

"Clara! Take Chloe and run out the back!" Julian shouted over the roaring din of the magical clash, his voice straining with immense effort as he pinned the lead Keeper to the floor.

I didn't hesitate. I turned and sprinted up the stairs, my heart hammering against my ribs, ignoring the burning pain of the crimson symbol on my palm.
