Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Pact

The backyard party had long since descended into chaotic panic. Our relatives and neighbors had retreated indoors or fled the property entirely, whispered rumors spreading like wildfire. Only my father, Julian, Eleanor, Chloe, and I remained out by the pool, enveloped in an oppressive, unnatural silence that felt heavier than lead.

"You're telling me," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper as I glared at my husband and my stepmother, "that my husband has been physically tethered to my stepmother since before we even met, and that this... this curse or whatever demonic sickness it is, is now targeting my four-year-old daughter?"

"It’s not a curse, Clara. It’s a lineage protection," my father interjected defensively, stepping forward. "If the anchor fails, whatever is trapped beneath the earth where Eleanor grew up will break free. Thousands of lives—millions—could be lost. Your grandfather died protecting that seal."

"I don't give a damn about my grandfather's seals or ancient lineages!" I screamed, finally losing whatever fragile composure I had left. I stepped up to my father and shoved him hard against his chest. "You knew? You married her knowing she carried this monstrosity? And you let Julian into our lives? You let him marry me?"

"I thought it was dormant!" my father shouted back, his own tears finally spilling over. "Eleanor promised me that the bloodline had weakened enough to die out naturally with her generation! We didn't know that Julian’s proximity would reactivate it!"

Julian stood up slowly from the concrete, his legs shaking. He walked over to me, stopping a few feet away, respecting the barrier of fury I had erected around myself.

"Clara, listen to me," Julian pleaded, his eyes filled with absolute agony. "Every time I've been hiding things on my phone, every late-night trip I took... I was meeting with Eleanor to try and find a way to sever this connection without hurting anyone. We’ve been trying to find a loophole. The medical checkups she talked about? They weren't doctors, Clara. They were practitioners of old blood-magic, trying to excise the ink from her skin."

I looked at Eleanor. True to his words, her arms and shoulders were dotted with tiny, circular burn marks—the scars of failed cauterizations and desperate rituals.

"And why didn't you tell me?" I demanded, my voice breaking. "Why lie to me? We're supposed to be partners! If you had just told me the truth, we could have faced it together instead of me finding out because my four-year-old daughter pointed at a living portrait on my stepmother's ribs!"

"Because the moment you know the full extent of the blood-pact, you become part of it," Julian replied softly. "Just by seeing it clearly, just by acknowledging the bond with a pure intent, your name has now been written into the periphery of the ledger."

A sudden, sharp pain flared across my right palm. I hissed, pulling my hand up to my face. Etched faintly across my skin, right beneath my thumb, was a tiny, intricate crimson symbol—the exact shape of the crest hanging from the silver chain around Eleanor's neck.

"No..." I breathed, staring at my hand in absolute horror. "No, I didn't agree to this!"

"Consent doesn't matter to ancient blood, Clara," Eleanor whispered, her voice hollow. "Once it touches your sight, it claims your lineage. And right now... it has locked its sights on Chloe."
