Chapter 9 - Building Anew

With the settlement funds recovered from the frozen trust, alongside a substantial portion of the marital assets awarded in the final court judgment, Matthew and I moved into a sunlit townhouse across town.
It had a large backyard with a wooden swing set and an enormous oak tree that Matthew immediately claimed as his personal castle. The rooms smelled of fresh paint, cedar wood, and baking cookies—simple, honest smells with no hidden malice behind them.

I went back to school to finish my degree in architecture, something I had put on hold when Michael convinced me I wasn't "strong enough" to balance a career and a family. Every evening, Matthew would sit at the kitchen island with his colored pencils, sketching his own imaginary buildings while I reviewed blueprints.
