Chapter 7 - Shadows and Healing

While the legal battles raged in the background over the coming months, our primary focus shifted to repairing the emotional damage done to Chloe.

The dinner had left deep scars. Chloe became quieter at school, timid about sharing her achievements, and worried that she was somehow a burden to us.

We enrolled her in art therapy with a wonderful counselor named Sarah. Week by week, through paints, clay, and soft conversations, Chloe began to process the event.

One evening, Chloe brought home a canvas she had painted. It showed a large, stormy tree with gray leaves, but nestled in one of the central branches was a glowing bird made of bright yellow and gold paint, sheltered under two larger, strong blue wings.

"Who are the blue wings?" I asked, holding the canvas gently.

"You and Daddy," Chloe whispered, smiling softly. "The storm was Grandma's house. But the wings keep the light safe."

Andrew pulled her into a tight hug, tears shining in his eyes. "Always, sweetie. Always."

Meanwhile, Aunt Denise and Cousin Mark cut off contact with Margaret and Britney, choosing instead to visit our home regularly. They apologized profusely for not speaking up sooner at the dinner table and became a true source of extended family warmth for Chloe. They brought over board games, baked cookies, and showed up at her soccer matches, proving to her that family could be safe, loving, and supportive.
