Chapter 2 - The Ledger of Betrayal

Then he looked directly at his mother and said, "You took $171,600 from your own granddaughter's trust fund. And tonight, you had the nerve to humiliate her."

The quiet in the room turned brittle. Margaret’s posture stiffened, her chin jutting out in defensive indignation. "Andrew, how dare you make wild accusations at my holiday table! That money was handled according to your grandmother’s wishes and family needs!"

"Grandma Josephine’s wishes were clear," Andrew replied, his voice terrifyingly calm. "She left two hundred and fifty thousand dollars strictly for Chloe’s education and future. She made you and Dad the trustees. She trusted you. And instead of protecting her legacy, you treated her great-granddaughter's future like a personal checking account."

Andrew turned the folder around so Aunt Denise and Cousin Mark could see the line items. Red ink highlighted every unauthorized transfer.

"Look at the dates," Andrew continued, gesturing to the paper. "July 14th—seven thousand five hundred dollars transferred to a contractor for Britney’s kitchen remodel. October 2nd—four thousand two hundred dollars for Britney’s credit card debt. November 19th—three thousand dollars cash withdrawal labeled 'miscellaneous expenses.' All while you were emailing me, begging for money to pay your utility bills and car repairs!"

Britney’s face flushed a deep, blotchy crimson. She slammed her palm on the table. "You stalked our bank accounts?! That money was family money! Grandma Josephine loved all of us, not just your little favorite!"

"Grandma Josephine left this specific trust exclusively for Chloe," I chimed in, keeping my voice firm and steady as I kept my reassuring hand on Chloe’s shoulder. "And as trustees, Margaret and William had a fiduciary duty to safeguard every penny. What you’ve done isn't just selfish—it's fraud."

Margaret let out a sharp, mocking laugh, though her hands trembled as she adjusted her pearl necklace. "Fraud? In my own house? I gave up my entire life to care for Josephine in her final months! If I took a management fee, I was entitled to it! You ungrateful boy—after everything I’ve done for you!"

"You didn't take a management fee, Mom," Andrew said, staring into her eyes with a solemn realization that the woman in front of him had no remorse. "You stole from a child. And every time I sent you money to 'help' you out of a jam, I was unwittingly subsidizing the lifestyle you were funding with Chloe's stolen money."

Chloe looked up from her plate, her eyes wide as she began to process what was happening. She wasn't the burden they made her out to be. She wasn't the 'grandchild to be ashamed of.' She was the child whose inheritance had been stripped away by the very people laughing at her.
