Chapter 8 - The Price of Pride

My mother sobbed quietly on the porch, her shoulders shaking under the porch light.

"Is there no path back?" she begged. "Not even for Lily? She's my blood."

"Blood doesn't give you the right to abuse people," I said firmly. "If you want a path back, it doesn't start with coming to my house uninvited. It starts with real, professional help. It starts with taking full accountability for what you did to Emily, without excuses, without blaming stress, and without expecting anything in return."

Emily appeared at the top of the stairs, watching quietly. She didn't look angry; her expression was calm, secure, and dignified.

My mother looked past me and saw Emily standing there, glowing in the warmth of our peaceful home, her head held high. For the first time in her life, my mother bowed her head in true, unvarnished shame. She realized that the woman she had degraded as "trash" possessed a grace and strength she could never purchase.

Margaret gently placed the wrapped gift on the porch bench.

"It's a sweater for Lily," she whispered. "I knitted it myself. You don't have to give it to her if you don't want to. I... I just wanted her to have something from me."

"I'll decide what's best for Lily," I replied softly. "Goodnight, Mom."

She turned and walked down the steps into the dark, her footsteps slow and heavy. I stepped outside, picked up the box, and closed the door behind me.
