Chapter 4 - Cracks in the Golden Armor

While our home became a haven of peace, the structural integrity of my mother’s household began to rot from within. Without Emily to serve as the resident scapegoat, the toxic dynamic had nowhere to go but inward.

Vanessa, stripped of her favorite target, turned her sharp tongue on Mark and my mother.

It started with small complaints. Vanessa began criticizing Margaret’s cooking, her taste in decor, and the way she ran the household. Mark, caught between his overbearing mother and his status-obsessed wife, began spending longer hours at his law firm, drowning his frustration in work and whiskey.

One evening in early April, Mark called me from a local pub, his voice slurred and heavy with self-pity.

"You had the right idea, Dan," he muttered into the receiver. "You got out."

"What happened, Mark?" I asked, sitting on the porch as the spring breeze stirred the trees.

"They're tearing each other apart," Mark admitted, letting out a bitter laugh. "Vanessa told Mom her house smells like dust and decay. Mom told Vanessa she’s a shallow gold-digger who only married me for my equity share. They had a screaming match right in the living room. Vanessa packed up the kids and went to a hotel."

"And what did you do?"

May you like

"I stood there," Mark whispered. "Just like you used to. Except nobody walked away with dignity. We're all just miserable."

I felt a faint pang of sadness for my brother, but I knew I couldn't save a man who refused to leave his own cage. "You can make a choice, Mark. But you have to decide who you're living for."
