Chapter 10 - A Feast Worth Keeping

One year after that disastrous Christmas night, the winter snow was falling softly once again. But this time, there was no tension, no harsh whispers, and no sharp knives hidden behind fake smiles.
Our dining room was filled with the warm scent of roasted turkey, fresh rosemary rolls, and baked apple pie. The table was dressed in linen and flowers that Emily had arranged herself—vibrant, beautiful, and full of life.
Around the table sat those who truly loved and supported us: Emily’s close friends, her lovely aunt who had always treated us like gold, my brother Mark—who had finally left Vanessa, gotten sober, and was working hard to rebuild his own life—and my mother.
Margaret sat quietly near the end of the table. She was no longer the matriarch who dictated terms; she was a guest who was deeply grateful simply to have a chair. She watched Emily with profound respect, helping clear plates when requested and speaking softly to Lily.
Before we ate, I stood up and raised my glass.
"A year ago, we left a table filled with anger," I said, looking around at the bright, smiling faces surrounding us. "And tonight, we sit at a table built on respect, peace, and love. I want to thank my incredible wife, Emily, whose strength and grace saved this family in ways she’ll never fully know. To new traditions, clear boundaries, and genuine love."
"To new traditions!" everyone cheered, their glasses clinking under the warm, glowing light.

I looked down at Emily. She smiled up at me, her eyes shining with absolute joy and security. Beneath the table, she reached over and squeezed my hand tightly.
Outside, the snow continued to fall quietly over the roof, but inside, our home was warm, safe, and finally complete.
