Chapter 5 - Sanctuary Built for Three

While the storm raged on the other side of town, our world was blooming.
I took a promotion at work that required extra dedication, but offered true financial independence. Emily, freed from the soul-crushing anxiety of trying to win over people who refused to see her worth, threw herself into her passion: interior design and floral arrangement. She started a modest online business out of our garage, transforming vintage furniture and creating bespoke arrangements.
Within eight months, her small business took off. Local boutiques began placing bulk orders, and her confidence grew with every client who praised her artistic eye.
Lily thrived in the peace of our renovated life. The timid, quiet girl who had clutched her milk glass in fear at the Christmas table blossomed into a joyful, outgoing second-grader. She excelled in art class, made bright new friends, and laughed without checking the room first to see if it was allowed.
One Saturday morning in mid-summer, as Emily stood in our sunny kitchen, surrounded by freshly cut hydrangeas and sunflowers, she paused and looked out at the backyard where Lily and I were building a wooden playhouse.
When I walked inside to grab a glass of water, she wrapped her arms around my waist from behind, resting her cheek against my back.
"Thank you," she whispered.

"For taking my hand and walking out that night," she said, tears shining in her eyes—not of pain, but of profound relief. "You gave us our life back."
