Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Ruins

Damian kept his word.
He bought a small, fixer-upper cottage on the edge of town. He didn’t hire contractors; he did the work himself, spending his days sanding floors, painting walls, and learning how to tend a garden. The physical labor gave him time to think, to shed the layers of violence and paranoia that had defined his adult life.
He became a regular presence in Harrow Falls, but he kept his distance. He sat in the back row of Eli’s soccer games, never cheering too loudly, but always there. He donated anonymously to the community center, ensuring Isabella’s programs had brand-new equipment and funding for years to come.
Slowly, Isabella’s icy resolve began to melt. She watched him from afar. She saw him helping an elderly neighbor carry groceries. She saw him buying coffee at the local diner, speaking politely to the waitress, leaving generous tips, and never demanding respect. He was earning it.
One rainy Saturday afternoon, Eli’s soccer game was canceled. Isabella drove past Damian’s cottage and saw him on the roof, trying to secure a tarp over a leak in the pouring rain. He slipped, barely catching himself on the gutter.
Without thinking, Isabella pulled her car over.
She got out, holding a large umbrella, and walked up to the edge of the roof. “Damian! Get down from there before you break your neck!”
Damian looked down, wiped the rain from his eyes, and smiled. It was a genuine, boyish smile she hadn't seen since they were teenagers in Chicago. He climbed down the ladder, his shirt soaked through, shivering slightly.
“I almost had it,” he said, laughing.
Isabella looked at him, her heart softening in a way she had sworn it never would. “Come inside my car. You’re going to get pneumonia.”
They sat in the quiet of her car, the rain drumming a steady rhythm against the windshield.
“Why are you doing this, Damian?” she asked softly. “You could have any life you wanted. Why this?”
Damian turned to look at her, his eyes dark with absolute sincerity. “Because the only life I ever wanted was the one I threw away in that hospital room. I don’t care about the money or the power. I just want to be close to the only two people who ever truly loved me.”

Isabella closed her eyes, a tear escaping down her cheek. She reached out, her hand hesitant, before placing it over his cold, damp fingers.
“You have to tell him, Damian,” she whispered. “He deserves to know who you are.”
