Chapter 8 - The Confrontation and the Choice

Isabella quickly stepped between them, putting a protective hand on Eli’s shoulder. “Eli, go back to the game for a few minutes. I need to speak with Damian privately.”
Eli hesitated, looking between the two adults, before slowly nodding. “Okay. But I’ll be watching.” He pointed two fingers at his eyes, then at Damian, a playful but protective gesture he had likely copied from a movie.
Damian couldn’t help but smile. “He’s incredible, Isabella.”
“He is,” Isabella said, her voice shaking as she turned back to Damian. “And he is mine. I raised him. I comforted him when he cried for a father he didn't know. I worked double shifts to pay for his soccer gear. You don’t get to just walk in and claim him because you finally did your homework.”
“I don't want to take him from you,” Damian said desperately. “I want to support you. I want to give him everything he deserves. I want to buy you a house, pay for his college, make sure you never have to worry about a single bill again.”
“We don’t want your money, Damian!” Isabella hissed. “Your money is covered in blood and lies. If you want to do something for us, if you truly feel remorse... then leave. Let us keep our peace.”
Damian stared at her. He saw the fierce, unyielding love she had for their son. He saw the life she had built from nothing, twenty-three dollars at a time. And he realized that if he walked away now, he would be committing the exact same sin he did nine years ago—choosing his own fear and pride over his family.
“I won’t leave, Isabella,” Damian said quietly but firmly. “But I won’t force myself into your lives either. I’m staying in Harrow Falls. I’ve stepped down from the family business in Chicago. I’m transferring control to my lieutenants and putting all my assets into a blind trust for Eli. I’m done with that life. I’m going to buy a small house here. I’m going to work. And I am going to prove to you, every single day, that I can be the man you deserved nine years ago.”
Isabella searched his face, looking for the ruthless mafia boss she had fled. But she found only a broken, hopeful man begging for a chance at redemption.

“You’re crazy,” she whispered.
“I was crazy to ever let you go,” Damian replied.
