Chapter 6 - The Long Road Back

Harrow Falls was a quiet town where the loudest sound on a Thursday afternoon was the rustle of wind through the maple trees.
Damian parked his black SUV a block away from the community center. He wore a simple dark sweater and jeans, trying to blend into the background, though his commanding presence still drew occasional curious glances from passersby.
He walked to the edge of the community center’s playground. A group of children were playing soccer on a grassy field.
Damian’s eyes locked onto Eli instantly.
The boy was playing defense, standing with his arms crossed, watching the game with an analytical intensity that sent a shiver down Damian’s spine. When an opposing player tried to dribble past him, Eli moved with sudden, explosive speed, cleanly intercepting the ball and passing it to a teammate with perfect precision.
“Nice pass, Eli!” a coach yelled from the sidelines.
Eli nodded once, a small, satisfied smile playing on his lips, before returning to his defensive stance.
Damian stood by the chain-link fence, his heart hammering against his ribs. He felt an overwhelming urge to call out, to run onto the field and hold his son, to beg for a chance to know him. But he forced himself to stay still. He was a stranger. A ghost from a dark past they had escaped.
Suddenly, the playground doors opened, and Isabella walked out carrying a water cooler. She was talking to another volunteer, her face bright with a warm, genuine smile.
Then, as if sensing a shift in the air, her eyes drifted toward the fence.
She froze.
The plastic cooler slipped from her hands, spilling ice and water onto the gravel. The color drained from her face, and her hand flew to her mouth. Nine years of peace, nine years of building a fortress around her heart, vanished in a single, terrifying second.
Damian did not move. He simply looked at her, his eyes filled with a desperate, pleading sorrow.
Isabella walked toward him, her steps slow, as if she were walking toward a firing squad. She stopped five feet away, on the opposite side of the fence.

“Why are you here, Damian?” she whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and anger. “How did you find us?”
“I know the truth, Isabella,” Damian said, his voice cracking. “I know everything.”
