Chapter 3 - The Crack in the Empire

The turning point began not with a gunshot, but with a ledger.
It was the spring of Eli’s ninth year. In Chicago, the federal authorities had begun a quiet, sweeping audit of several shell companies associated with the Moretti family. To counter the threat, Damian ordered a complete internal review of all financial records stretching back a decade. He bypassed Victor, handing the task to a young, terrified forensic accountant named Leo Vance, who had no loyalty to the old guard.
Three weeks into the audit, Vance knocked on Damian’s private office door at midnight. He was shaking.
“Mr. Moretti,” Vance stammered, placing a thick, leather-bound folder on the desk. “I was told to look for discrepancies in the offshore accounts. But I found something else. Something buried deep within the legal defense funds from nine years ago.”
Damian didn’t look up from his papers. “Explain.”
“There was a payment,” Vance said, his voice cracking. “A recurring monthly transfer of fifty thousand dollars made to a private testing facility in Indiana. It was authorized by Victor Salazar. The payments stopped the exact month your divorce from Isabella Hayes was finalized.”
Damian’s pen stopped. The silence in the room became heavy, suffocating.
“Go on,” Damian said, his voice dropping to a whisper that made the young accountant’s skin crawl.
“I dug deeper into the lab’s digital archives. I managed to recover the original, uncorrupted files from the DNA tests performed on the child born to Isabella Hayes.” Vance pulled out a single sheet of paper, his hands trembling as he slid it across the desk. “The first test wasn't inconclusive due to 'procedural irregularities,' Mr. Moretti. The lab was bribed to report that. And the second test... the one that was sealed and lost in the legal motions...”
Damian’s eyes fell to the paper.
At the bottom of the page, beneath the genetic markers, was a statistical probability.
Probability of Paternity: 99.99% Father: Damian Moretti.
The room seemed to tilt. The air left Damian’s lungs as if he had been struck by a physical blow. For nine years, he had lived with the certainty of betrayal. He had hardened his heart, convinced himself that Isabella had played him for a fool, and used that anger to fuel his rise to absolute power.
It was all a lie.

“There’s more,” Vance whispered, terrified of the beast he had just awakened. “The photographs... the ones showing Mrs. Moretti meeting with the rival syndicate leader. I ran them through a digital forensic tool. They were manipulated. The original metadata shows they were taken months apart, in different locations, and digitally stitched together. The source of the original files was a secure server owned privately by Victor Salazar.”
Damian did not speak. He did not yell. He simply stared at the name Eli Hayes on the document. His son. His flesh and blood. A boy who had spent nine years growing up without a father because Damian had chosen to trust a viper over his wife.
