Six months later, the dust began to settle, but true healing required facing the root causes of our family's broken dynamic.
My parents agreed to joint family therapy sessions—a step my father had resisted his entire life. In a quiet therapist's office, we sat in a circle: Mom, Dad, Daniel, and me. Madison participated via video link from her structured residential care facility.
The sessions were painful. For decades, my parents had enabled Madison’s avoidant behavior, treating her frailty as a virtue while expecting me to carry the weight of being the 'strong, reliable' daughter.
“We failed both of you,” my father admitted, his voice breaking in front of us for the first time in my life. “We enabled Madison until she thought lies were reality, and we ignored Claire because we assumed she needed nothing.”
