Chapter 4 - Cracks in the Foundation

My father stood rooted to the spot, his eyes darting between the crushed silicone stomach, the forged bank transfers, and his youngest daughter.

“You... stole from the company?” Dad asked, his voice barely a breath. “The money for the retirement fund? The equipment loans?”

Madison burst into hysterical sobs. “I had to, Dad! You guys always looked at Claire! She had a real marriage, a good job, a stable life! Everyone was waiting for me to fail! When I told you I was pregnant eight months ago, for the first time in my life, you looked at me with pride! I couldn't lose that!”

“You lied to us for eight months!” I yelled, the tears finally bursting free. “You sat at my dining table! You let our mother spend thousands on parties! You made us touch your belly! How could you do something so grotesque?!”

Daniel took my hand, pulling me back gently. He had discovered the truth only two hours earlier when an investigator for my father’s business flagged anomalous withdrawals authorized with forged signatures, leading directly to Madison's IP address and her correspondence with an illicit adoption ring.
