Chapter 3 - The Echoes of Betrayal

The silence in the garden felt suffocating. My mother sank slowly onto a nearby folding chair, her hands trembling violently against her knees.
“Madison...?” Mom whispered, her voice cracking into tiny fragments. “What is that? What are you wearing?”
Madison didn't answer right away. She pulled the torn blue dress around herself, trying desperately to cover the twisted silicone shell. Her face, which moments ago had held the ethereal glow of pending motherhood, was now slick with cold sweat and sheer panic.
“Claire, please,” Madison whimpered, looking past Daniel directly at me. “It’s not what it looks like... please listen to me.”
“Not what it looks like?” Daniel shouted, his voice trembling with a mixture of disgust and exhausted rage. He pulled a thick Manila envelope from inside his jacket and threw it onto the gift table, right beside the silver baby rattles and knitted socks. “Explain this then, Madison. Explain the bank transfers. Explain the legal paperwork!”
I stepped forward, my hands shaking so badly I could barely lift the papers from the table. As I pulled out the documents, my stomach dropped into a dark abyss.

For eight months, Madison had presented ultrasounds, doctor's updates, and medical bills. But in my hands were printed bank statements from my father's business account, paired with forged wire transfers totaling over two hundred thousand dollars. Even worse were private agency papers: Madison had placed an application with an international black-market adoption broker to acquire a newborn baby in two weeks' time to complete the lie.
She hadn't just faked a pregnancy. She had embezzled my parents' life savings to purchase a baby off the books, all to maintain her golden image and secure a massive family trust fund that unlocked only upon the birth of a grandchild.
