Chapter 9 - THE HEALING SOIL

Six months later, spring arrived in the Hudson Valley. The ancient apple trees in the Greylock orchard burst into full pink and white blossoms, filling the crisp mountain air with sweet perfume.
Nora stood on the wooden porch of the cottage, watching the sunrise over the river. She wore a simple linen dress, her hair tied back in a loose braid. Down in the orchard, Ethan was carrying six-month-old Hope in a front carrier, walking slowly beneath the blossoming trees, pointing up at the flowers and making the baby giggle.
Nora watched them with a warm, peaceful smile. Over the last half-year, Ethan had transformed completely. The cold, distracted corporate tycoon had vanished. In his place was a patient, humble man who listened to her, who cherished every moment with his daughter, and who had earned back every bit of her trust through quiet, consistent devotion.
He had officially dissolved the Cole Development industrial project for the valley. Instead, Ethan used his personal fortune to create the Greylock Nature & Agricultural Preserve, legally protecting Nora’s ancestral land from commercial construction forever.
Ethan turned and saw Nora watching them from the porch. He walked up the stone steps, a warm smile on his handsome, healed face.
"She fell asleep right under the giant Granny Smith tree," Ethan whispered, gently adjusting Hope’s sunhat as the baby slept soundly against his chest.
"She loves the orchard," Nora said softly, stepping closer to them.
Ethan reached into his pocket. He pulled out a small velvet box he had been carrying for months. He opened it, revealing her silver wedding band, polished and shining like new.
"Nora," Ethan said, his voice deep and sincere. "You gave me a second chance when I deserved nothing. You showed me what true strength and devotion look like. I don't want to go back to the life we had before. I want to build a new life here with you and Hope—one built on truth, respect, and unconditional love."
He looked into her eyes, his heart on his sleeve. "Will you wear my ring again?"
Nora looked at the ring, then at her husband’s hopeful face. The wounds of the past had healed, leaving behind scars that reminded them both of how fragile love was and how hard they had fought to save it.
She smiled, tears of happiness brimming in her eyes. She held out her left hand.

"Put it on my finger, Ethan," she whispered.
Ethan’s hand shook slightly as he slid the band back onto her ring finger, fitting perfectly once more. He pulled Nora into his arms, kissing her deeply under the morning sun while their daughter slept peacefully between them.
