Chapter 7 - WORDS IN THE DARK

Nora woke up slowly to the soft, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor. The blinding white ceiling of the hospital room came into focus. The sharp, tearing pain in her lower stomach had diminished to a dull, manageable ache, controlled by the IV drip in her arm.
She gasped, her hand darting down to her stomach. It was flat.
"Baby..." she sobbed out in panic. "Where is my baby?!"
"She’s safe, Nora. She’s in the NICU."
A warm hand gently took hers. Nora turned her head to see Ethan sitting in a chair beside her bed. He looked exhausted, his face bruised and swollen, his shoulder wrapped in a heavy brace. But his eyes were shining with overwhelming love and relief.
Nora pulled her hand away from his touch, her expression guarding up instantly. The memory of the perfume, the Mercer Hotel, and the forged land documents came rushing back like a dark cloud.
"What are you doing here, Ethan?" she whispered, her voice cold and raspy. "Where is she? Where is Vanessa?"
Ethan didn't get angry at her pulling away. He knew he deserved far worse. He bowed his head, accepting her coldness as his rightful punishment.
"Vanessa is in federal custody," Ethan said quietly. "She’s facing decades in prison for corporate theft and attempted murder. The man she sent to hurt you is in jail. You and our daughter are completely safe now."
Nora looked away, tears sliding down her temple into her hair. "She signed my grandmother’s land away, Ethan. You let her."
"I was a blind idiot, Nora," Ethan confessed, his voice shaking with raw emotion. "I let my ego and work consume me. I thought she was just an ambitious CFO. I didn't verify the shell company transfers because I trusted her blindly while I neglected the only woman who ever truly loved me for who I am."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out two items, laying them gently on the bedside table.
The first was the original, un-forged land titles to her grandmother’s estate, along with a legal deed transferring ownership of the entire surrounding valley directly to Nora’s name alone.
The second was her silver wedding ring.
"I had my lawyers restore your family’s land," Ethan said softly. "No developments will ever touch it. It is yours forever. And... I brought your ring back. But I won't force you to put it on."
Nora looked at the ring glowing under the fluorescent lights. "Why are you here, Ethan? Is it guilt?"
Ethan looked up, meeting her eyes directly. "It started as horror and guilt. But standing in that dark factory, seeing your blood on the floor... I realized that if I lost you, my entire life, my money, my empire, meant absolutely nothing. I don't expect you to forgive me today, Nora. I don't even expect you to come home with me. But I am going to prove to you every single day for the rest of my life that you and our daughter are my only priority."

Before Nora could answer, a soft knock came at the door. A nurse pushed a mobile bassinet into the room.
"Mrs. Cole? Someone special just came off the ventilator and wanted to meet her mother."
