Chapter 8 - REBUILDING FROM ASHES

Nora forgotten her anger in an instant. She carefully leaned up in bed as the nurse gently lifted the small bundle wrapped in a pink blanket and placed her into Nora’s waiting arms.

Nora looked down at her daughter’s tiny face. She had a soft tuft of dark hair just like Ethan’s, and tiny dark eyes that blinked up at her curiously.

"Oh, my sweet girl..." Nora sobbed, holding the baby close to her heart. "You made it. We made it."

Ethan stood up slowly, standing a respectful distance away, watching them with tears filling his eyes, not wanting to intrude on their moment.

Nora looked up from the baby and caught Ethan’s gaze. She saw the profound remorse, the raw love, and the protective devotion in his eyes. He had fought a hitman with his bare hands and broken his own shoulder to save them. He had destroyed his CFO and ruined his own business reputation to bring justice.

"Ethan," Nora said softly. "Come here."

Ethan hesitated, then stepped closer to the bedside.

"Hold your daughter," she said.

Ethan’s hands trembled as he carefully cupped his arms beneath the baby, cradling her against his chest. As he looked down at his daughter, the small child reached out her tiny hand and brushed Ethan’s bruised cheek.

"Her name is Hope," Nora said softly. "Hope Elizabeth Cole."

Ethan closed his eyes, pressing a soft kiss to his baby’s head, tears spilling down his face. "Hope. It’s perfect."

The next few weeks were a painful but necessary period of rebuilding. Ethan stepped down as CEO of Cole Development, handing over daily operations to an independent board while he submitted the entire company to a full forensic audit. He publicly apologized to the shareholders and the media, bearing full responsibility for his lapse in oversight.

Vanessa Reed’s trial was brief. Faced with mountain-high evidence of wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit murder, she accepted a plea deal that sentenced her to thirty years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.

Nora didn't move back to the Greenwich mansion right away. Instead, she took baby Hope up to her grandmother’s renovated cottage in Greylock, seeking peace among the Hudson Valley orchards.

And Ethan didn't press her. Instead, every weekend, he drove up to the cottage. He didn't come as a billionaire; he came as a husband trying to win back his wife’s heart. He chopped wood for her fireplace, built a custom wooden crib for Hope with his own hands, and sat on the porch in the evenings listening to Nora talk about her childhood memories.
