Chapter 2 - THE RECKONING AT GREYLOCK

The silence in the master suite felt suffocating, heavy with the phantom scent of jasmine and vanilla—Vanessa’s signature perfume—clinging to the lapels of Ethan’s jacket. But the perfume no longer evoked foolish desire or guilt; it reeked of deception, rotten and metallic, underscored by the sharp, terrifying smell of blood drying on cashmere.

Ethan stood paralyzed in the center of the vast, dimly lit room. The silver ring on the pillow seemed to burn into his vision. Eight years of marriage, eight years of shared laughter, quiet mornings, and a foundation built on what he had stupidly believed was unshakeable trust, reduced to a cold band of platinum and a blood-stained sleeve.

"Mr. Cole? Are you still there?" Dr. Harrison’s voice crackled through the speaker of Ethan’s primary phone, cutting through the suffocating fog in his mind. "Listen to me carefully. Severe abdominal pain accompanied by bright red bleeding at thirty-four weeks is an obstetric emergency. If Nora hasn't arrived at St. Jude’s Memorial, she could be in severe distress. Placental abruption, severe preeclampsia—it could kill them both!"

Kill them both.

The words hit Ethan like a physical blow, driving the oxygen from his lungs. His unborn daughter. His wife. The woman who had built him up when he was nothing more than an ambitious young architect with a dream and a debt-ridden legacy. Nora, who had patiently waited for him through endless late-night board meetings, who had painted stars on a nursery ceiling while he was lying in the arms of a viper.

"I’m going to find her," Ethan gasped out, his voice cracked and unrecognizable. "Which hospital did you tell her to go to?"

"St. Jude’s in Manhattan. But Mr. Cole, if she was driving herself in that condition—"

Ethan didn't wait to hear the rest. He hung up, his hands shaking so violently he almost dropped the phone. He looked back down at the burner phone he had pulled from Nora’s coat pocket. The screen burned bright in the dim light.

She found the transfers. Handle her before she reaches the attorney.

The message was addressed to a contact named simply G. Attached was a grainy, telephoto image of Nora stepping out of their iron gates into the rain, clutching her swelling stomach, her face pale with agony.

Vanessa hadn't just been tracking him. She had been hunting Nora.

Ethan’s mind raced through the maze of lies he had blindly accepted over the last six months. The late-night financial audits. The sudden urgency to acquire Nora’s ancestral land in the Hudson Valley. Vanessa’s sweet, whispered reassurances: "Nora is just emotional because of the hormones, Ethan. She doesn't understand the scale of Cole Development. Let me handle the land acquisition. You focus on the investors."

He had been a blind, arrogant fool. He had traded gold for poisoned copper.

Thrusting both phones into his pocket, Ethan bolted down the grand marble staircase of his Greenwich mansion, the heavy front doors slamming behind him like a thunderclap. He threw himself into his Aston Martin, the engine roaring to life with a ferocious snarl. Rain was pouring down now, sweeping across the dark Connecticut highway as he slammed his foot onto the accelerator, sending the vehicle violently accelerating into the night.

His phone synced to the car’s console. He dialed Vanessa’s direct number.

She picked up on the second ring. Her voice was smooth, velvety, laced with a artificial warmth that now made Ethan’s stomach churn with revulsion.

"Ethan, darling? Did you forget something at my apartment? You only left half an hour ago..."

Ethan gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turned white. He forced his voice to remain steady, though a deep, lethal fury coursed through his veins.

"Vanessa. Where are you?"

A brief pause hovered over the line. "At home, in bed. Missing you already. Why? Is everything alright? You sound... strange."

"I’m at the office," Ethan lied smoothly, his eyes fixed on the rain-slicked pavement rushing beneath him. "I needed to double-check the Hudson Valley development files before the morning board meeting. The land transfer deeds for the Greylock estate."

There was an immediate shift in the atmosphere over the line. A subtle, sharp intake of breath.

"Ethan, it’s three-thirty in the morning," Vanessa said, her tone dropping its playful edge, replacing it with a cool, sharp efficiency. "Those files are locked in my private vault. I told you, the signing was finalized yesterday. Nora’s power of attorney cleared through the shell corporation, Shell-Corp Alpha. There’s no need for you to worry your head about it."

"She didn't sign it, Vanessa," Ethan said softly.

Silence. Heavy, oppressive silence.

"What are you talking about?" Vanessa’s voice was icy now.

"Nora left her ring on my pillow. She left a letter. And she left a second phone—one that fell out of her coat pocket. A phone receiving text messages from you, telling someone named 'G' to handle her."

Ethan heard the sharp scrape of fabric, the sound of Vanessa moving quickly.

"Ethan, listen to me—"

"Where is she, Vanessa?!" Ethan roared, losing his composure as the tachometer needle bounced near the redline. "What did you do to my wife?!"

"You idiot!" Vanessa’s voice dropped all pretense of sweetness, barking out with vicious, unhinged venom. "You absolute, pathetic fool! You think Nora is some innocent little martyr? She was going to destroy everything! She was going to report the offshore accounts to the SEC! I built Cole Development while you were playing the visionary architect! I siphoned those funds because I earned them!"

"WHERE IS SHE?!"

"It doesn't matter anymore," Vanessa hissed, a sickening, triumphant laugh echoing through the speakers. "She’s not going to Manhattan, Ethan. She’s too smart for that. She knew I’d have the city hospitals watched. She headed straight north toward her grandmother’s property in Greylock—to the old cottage. She thinks she can hide there with her little legal documents and her bastard baby."

Ethan’s heart froze. Greylock. The secluded, heavily wooded land along the Hudson River. Isolated, miles away from any major trauma center, surrounded by abandoned textile mills and thick forest.

"If you touch a single hair on her head—"

"I won't have to," Vanessa sneered. "My man is already at the estate. By the time you get up north, Nora will have suffered a unfortunate 'accidental slip' on those old rotten cottage steps. A tragic loss for the bereaved billionaire. And you, Ethan... you will keep your mouth shut, or I will drop the paper trail that proves you authorized every single fraudulent wire transfer. You signed the documents, Ethan. I just held the pen."

The call disconnected with a sharp beep.

Ethan’s breath hit his chest in ragged, desperate gasps. He didn't hit the brakes. He didn't call the police yet—he knew local law enforcement in that remote county would take thirty minutes to dispatch to Greylock.

He didn't have thirty minutes. Nora was bleeding out in the dark, hunted by a mercenary in the shadows of her childhood home.

Slamming the wheel to the left, Ethan forced the sports car into a dangerous, skidding U-turn across the median, spraying mud and water as he pointed the vehicle north, accelerating wildly into the dark, storm-drenched belly of the Hudson Valley.
