Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Silence stretched inside the dark rail depot, broken only by the rhythmic thrum of rain against the corrugated tin roof.

Daniel backed slowly away from the entrance, dragging Lily toward an elevated iron catwalk that ran above a line of abandoned freight cars.

“You don't understand, Detective!” Daniel shouted back, his voice echoing frantically. “Rachel was taking her from me! She was going to move across the country! I built a life for my daughter! I gave her everything!”

“You locked her in a cellar beneath a burning house, Daniel!” Elena called out as she quietly slipped through a broken side window into the depot, her gun raised. “You framed your wife! You used your own child’s voice to stage a fake 911 call! That’s not love—that’s possession!”

Elena signaled her team to hold position at the doors while she crept along the shadow of an old engine car.

On the catwalk twenty feet above, Daniel held Lily tightly against his chest, holding the gun pointed down toward the dark floor of the depot.

“I made one mistake,” Daniel muttered to himself, his voice trembling as he looked around wildly. “The fire moved too fast... the relay spark ignited the insulation faster than I calculated. But I saved her! I pulled her out of the cellar before the smoke got her!”

“You put her in danger to save your own ego!” Elena’s voice rang out from the shadows near the base of the catwalk.

Daniel spun around, aiming his weapon toward the sound. “Stay back! I'll jump! I swear to God, Elena, I’ll jump off this catwalk with her!”

Lily looked down at the concrete floor far below, then up at her father's unhinged, terrified eyes. She knew she couldn't wait for the detective to save her. She had to act.

Using the trick her mother had taught her during their weekend self-defense class, Lily reached up, grabbed Daniel’s thumb, and bent it backward as hard as she could while stomping her heel onto his foot.

Daniel shrieked in pain, dropping the gun. It clattered against the iron grating of the catwalk and fell into the shadows below.
