Chapter 6 - Pursuit in the Dark
The thunderstorm raged over the Blackwood forest, lightning illuminating the towering pines in sharp, terrifying flashes.
Daniel carried Lily through the muddy underbrush. Lily struggled against his grip, her small legs kicking wild in the rain.
“Let me go! Daddy, let me go!” she screamed, her voice lost to the roaring wind.
“Stop fighting me, Lily!” Daniel roared, his voice cold and devoid of the fatherly warmth he had faked for years. “I did all of this for you! Your mother didn't want you! She let the house burn! I am the only one who truly loves you!”
“You're lying!” Lily cried out. She reached into her pocket, pulled out her small plastic school whistle, and blew into it with all the strength in her lungs.
The shrill blast echoed through the dark forest.
A quarter-mile away, Elena heard the sharp whistle. “Over there!” she yelled to the tactical officers behind her.
They surged through the woods, flashlight beams cutting through the heavy rain.
Daniel heard the oncoming footfalls and cursing under his breath, he sprinted toward the rusted metal structures of the old abandoned rail depot. The depot was a sprawling complex of decaying train cars, rusted iron beams, and dilapidated warehouses.
He burst through the rotting wooden doors of the main train barn, dragging Lily inside and slamming the heavy iron latch shut behind them.
Inside, the air was cold and smelled of rust and diesel fuel. Daniel caught his breath, his eyes wild as he scanned the darkness for a place to hide.
“You're going to stay quiet,” Daniel hissed, pulling a small handgun from his jacket pocket. “If you make a sound, they will find us, and they will take you away from me forever.”
Lily looked at the gun in her father’s hand. For the first time, she saw the reality of who he was: a man consumed by control, willing to destroy everything—including her—rather than lose.

Outside, Elena reached the heavy iron doors. She motioned for her officers to stack up on either side of the entrance.
“Daniel Carter!” Elena’s voice echoed through the metal walls from outside. “This is Detective Ruiz! The perimeter is secure. You have nowhere to go. Put down the weapon and bring Lily out!”
