Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Walls

Detective Elena Ruiz kept the elementary school surveillance footage running on a loop. Lily’s small hand gripped her purple backpack as Daniel’s hand rested heavily on her shoulder. The timeline was unraveling fast. Daniel had claimed Lily was away at summer camp, but the camp had no record of her, and the photo he showed was a photo-shopped remnant of a field trip from the prior year.
Most damning of all was the stuffed rabbit. Firefighters had found it on the floor of Lily’s burned bedroom, yet the school camera showed she hadn’t been carrying it when Daniel picked her up. Daniel had returned to the house alone before the fire broke out to plant the rabbit and Lily’s hearing aid, constructing a sickeningly elaborate illusion.
Elena returned to the interrogation room, where Daniel sat with his hands loosely clasped, his expression an impassive shield of suburban innocence.
“You put that stuffed rabbit in her room tonight, Daniel,” Elena said, setting the high-definition printouts of the footage on the table. “You were inside that house before the flames started.”
Daniel didn't flinch. “I was retrieving a forgotten toy for my daughter. Is it a crime to visit my own home?”
“It is when you stage a crime scene to make it look like your wife burned your daughter alive,” Elena replied coldly. “Where is Lily?”
“I handed her over to Rachel at the diner on 4th Street at five o’clock on Friday,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a soft, practiced baritone. “If anything happened to my little girl after that, it was at her mother’s hands. You’ve seen Rachel's bank records. You’ve seen her temper. She’s the one losing her mind.”
Across the hallway, Rachel was collapsing under the weight of the nightmare. She sat with her head buried in her hands, weeping softly. When Elena entered, Rachel lifted her bloodshot eyes.
“I didn’t take her, Detective,” Rachel begged. “I swear to God, I haven’t seen Lily since Thursday morning. Daniel told me she was doing an early orientation program at Cedar Valley. He gave me schedules, emails... he made everything look so real.”
“Did Daniel’s sister, Melissa, ever spend time with Lily alone recently?” Elena asked.
Rachel wiped her face, trying to gather her thoughts. “Melissa... she bought Lily a second-hand dollhouse last month. She was always over at Daniel’s temporary apartment. But Melissa loved Lily. Why would her voice be on that recording telling Lily to practice calling 911?”
“Because Melissa was helping Daniel build a narrative,” Elena said.
A forensic technician knocked on the door and handed Elena a printout. The signal log from Lily’s digital hearing aid had been analyzed further. The 17-second audio clip hadn't been recorded live during the fire—it was a pre-recorded file played through an external speaker placed near the hearing aid's microphone right before the 911 call was patched through.

The voice on the phone hadn't been Lily speaking live. It was an AI-generated audio soundboard created from home videos of Lily, coupled with the staged recording of Melissa.
The entire 911 call was a phantom.
