Chapter 5 - The Fractured Alibi

Elena and a tactical team converged on the abandoned quarry site while state troopers set up roadblocks along Highway 9. The rain began to pour in heavy sheets, turning the dirt roads into thick mud.

As Elena drove, her mind pieced together Daniel’s psychological profile. He wasn't just trying to win custody; he was executing a complete erasure of Rachel’s existence. He had planted the gasoline in Rachel’s trunk, bought the timer with her forged credentials, and manipulated the insurance policy to give Rachel a financial motive for arson. He intended for Rachel to spend the rest of her life in a maximum-security prison while he started a new life under a false identity with Lily.

Suddenly, dispatch radioed through: “All units, we have an abandoned vehicle matching the suspect's license plate near Old Logging Road 12.”

Elena slammed her foot on the accelerator.

Ten minutes later, squad cars surrounded a black SUV wedged against a fallen oak tree. The driver’s side door was open.

Elena drew her sidearm and approached carefully. “Clear!” she called out.

Inside the vehicle sat Melissa Carter, slumped against the steering wheel, sobbing hysterically. Her hands were cuffed to the steering wheel with her own zip ties.

“He left me!” Melissa screamed through her tears as Elena pulled her out. “He said I was a liability! He took the emergency money and left me here!”

“Where is Lily?” Elena demanded, grabbing Melissa by the shoulders. “Where did he take her?”

“He... he has a second car stashed at the old rail depot two miles up the trail,” Melissa wept, broken and completely terrified. “He told Lily that Rachel was coming to meet them, but he’s planning to cross the border into Canada tonight! Please... I didn't know he was going to burn the house down! He told me it was just a scam to get full custody!”

“He put an eight-year-old child in a crawlspace under a burning building, Melissa!” Elena shouted. “He doesn't care about anyone but himself!”

Elena radioed the tactical team: “Suspect is on foot heading toward the Blackwood Rail Depot. He is armed and dangerous, carrying a eight-year-old child. Do not engage with lethal force unless clear of the hostage.”
