Chapter 6 - The Encryption Key

Elena immediately called Marcus back. "Try the word 'Albatross'—all lowercase, maybe with a capital A."
"On it," Marcus said, the sound of rapid keyboard clacking buzzing through the speaker. A few seconds of tense silence followed. Then, a sharp intake of breath came over the line.
"We're in," Marcus whispered, his voice laced with shock. "Elena... this isn't just financial corruption. There are audio recordings, bank statements, wire transfers... and a recorded phone call from six months ago between Richard Bennett and a head contractor at Vanguard Security."
"What does the call say?" Elena demanded, stepping away into a quiet corner of the hospital hallway.
"It’s Richard explicitly ordering a tail on Julian Vance... and saying 'make sure he doesn't reach the courtroom tomorrow, by any means necessary.' It’s a direct solicitation for murder."
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. They finally had him. The mountain of lies, power, and fear that Richard Bennett had built around his family was about to crumble.
"Get those files to the District Attorney immediately," Elena ordered. "Issue an urgent arrest warrant for Richard Bennett for conspiracy to commit murder, obstruction of justice, and witness intimidation."
"I'm printing the warrant now," Marcus replied. "I'll coordinate with the tactical unit."
Just as Elena ended the call, the heavy double doors of the surgical suite swung open. Dr. Naomi Grant walked out, pulling off her surgical mask. She looked exhausted, her forehead beaded with sweat, but her eyes held a glimmer of relief.
Laura sprang up from her seat. "Doctor? How is she?"
Dr. Grant offered a tired, genuine smile. "It was close. She lost a critical amount of blood, and we had to perform emergency surgery to stop the internal tearing. But Mia is alive. She’s stable, and she’s in recovery."
Laura burst into tears of pure relief, falling back into the chair as she held her pregnant belly. "Thank God... oh, thank God."
"Can I see her?" Noah asked, looking up at the doctor. "I brought her baby to the safe place like she wanted."
Dr. Grant knelt down in front of Noah, her eyes soft. "She's sleeping right now, little guy. But as soon as she wakes up, you'll be the very first person she wants to see. You saved her life, you know that?"
Noah smiled shyly, his small hand holding onto his mother’s coat.
"And what about the baby?" Elena asked.
"She’s doing remarkably well," Dr. Grant said, gesturing for them to follow her down the hallway. "Come on. I think someone wants to meet her family."
They walked down the quiet pediatric corridor to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Through the large glass window, they saw a tiny clear bassinet. Inside lay a miniature bundle wrapped in a pink blanket, wearing a tiny knitted cap. Her little hands were balling into small fists as she slept peacefully under the warm light.
Laura pressed her hand against the glass, tears streaming down her face. "She's beautiful... She looks just like Mia."
"She’s strong," Dr. Grant said proudly. "Just like her mother and her cousin."
Suddenly, the hospital’s emergency lights flickered. The overhead fluorescent tubes dimmed for a second before snapping back on with an ominous hum.
Elena’s instincts flared. Her hand instinctively dropped to her service weapon.
"Dr. Grant," Elena said low and firm. "Lock down the NICU. Right now."

"What's wrong?" Laura asked, panic returning to her voice.
"Richard Bennett knows the net is closing in," Elena said, stepping toward the main entrance of the ward. "And desperate men do dangerous things."
