Chapter 4 - Sins of the Patriarch

The emergency room at Westbridge Medical Center was bathed in harsh fluorescent light. Sirens blared outside as the paramedic gurney carrying Mia Bennett was wheeled at a breakneck pace down the trauma hallway.

"Patient is a twenty-four-year-old female, four hours postpartum, experiencing massive internal hemorrhage and severe hypothermia!" the paramedic shouted to the medical team.

Dr. Naomi Grant was already waiting, her expression grave. "Get her straight to Operating Room 3! Prepare two units of O-negative blood!" She paused briefly, catching Elena’s eye. "How is the child?"

"The baby girl is stable in the NICU," Dr. Grant replied quickly. "Her body temperature is up. But the mother... Elena, she’s in extreme critical condition. If she survives the night, it will be a miracle."

Elena stood in the waiting room, her police uniform splattered with mud and blood. Ten minutes later, the automatic glass doors slid open, and Laura walked in, accompanied by Sergeant Ellis. Laura’s face was swollen from crying, her hands resting nervously on her own pregnancy bump.

"Where is she?" Laura asked, her voice trembling. "Is she alive?"

"She's in surgery, Laura," Elena said gently, leading her to a plastic chair. "The doctors are doing everything they can."

Laura sank into the seat, burying her face in her hands. "I spoke to Daniel. He told me everything... all of it. How my father threatened to destroy his firm, how he threatened to tell me horrible lies to ruin our marriage if Daniel didn't hand Mia over once she gave birth." Laura looked up, her eyes burning with a mix of fury and profound grief. "My own father, Elena. He treated my sister like a disgraced secret to be erased."

"Richard Bennett is a powerful man in this state," Elena noted, drawing up a chair beside her. "Why was he so obsessed with hiding Mia’s pregnancy?"

Laura swallowed hard, taking a shaky breath. "Because of the baby's father."

Elena pulled out her notepad. "Who is the father?"

"His name was Julian Vance," Laura whispered. "He was a public defender—a good man, but poor, and an outspoken critic of my father's real estate empire. Julian was investigating corruption in my father's development contracts six months ago. Two weeks after Mia told my father she was pregnant with Julian's child... Julian was killed in a hit-and-run accident."

Elena’s spine went cold. "A hit-and-run? Was it investigated?"

"It was ruled an accident," Laura said, her knuckles turning white. "Mia knew it wasn't. She confronted my father, telling him she would go to the press with Julian's research and the baby. That’s when my father tried to have her committed. That’s when she ran."

The piece of the puzzle finally snapped into place. Mia’s pregnancy wasn't just an embarrassment to the wealthy Bennett family; it was the living evidence of a connection between Richard Bennett and a man who had died under deeply suspicious circumstances.

Just then, the glass doors opened again. Heavy, polished leather shoes clicked against the tile floor.

A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit walked into the waiting room, flanked by a high-priced attorney holding a leather briefcase. Richard Bennett possessed cold, calculating eyes and a silver mane of hair that gave him an air of absolute authority.

"Laura," Richard said softly, his voice devoid of warmth. "I came as soon as I heard."

Laura stood up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the floor. "Get away from me."

"Laura, please, be reasonable," Richard said, stepping forward with his hands raised in a patronizing gesture. "You're stressed. You need to think about your own child. I am here to take care of Mia and her... situation."

Elena stepped directly into Richard Bennett’s path, her badge flashing in the bright hospital lights.

"Mr. Bennett," Elena said calmly, though her voice carried the weight of steel. "You are currently interfering with an active criminal investigation involving kidnapping, extortion, and child endangerment."

Richard smirked slightly, adjusting his cuff links. "Detective... Cruz, is it? You are wildly out of your depth. My daughter suffers from severe psychological delusions. I have full legal guardianship papers pending in court. Anything she has said, or anything my foolish son-in-law claimed, is the product of an unstable mind."

"Your daughter is currently in surgery fighting for her life because she was terrified of you," Elena said, stepping closer until she was mere inches from his face. "And her child is in the room down the hall."

Richard’s eyes narrowed slightly. "That child belongs with family."

"That child," a soft voice spoke up from the hallway entrance, "belongs with her mother."

Everyone turned. Standing at the end of the corridor was eight-year-old Noah, holding a plastic cup of water, accompanied by a pediatric nurse. His small feet were now wearing clean blue socks and sneakers, but his eyes were fixed entirely on his grandfather.

"You're the bad man," Noah said clearly, his voice echoing in the silent hospital corridor. "Aunt Mia told me to hide from you."
