Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Moonlight

Elena’s gaze shifted slowly from the photograph on the nightstand to Daniel’s face. The atmosphere inside the cramped guesthouse grew suffocatingly dense. Outside, the night wind howled through the old maple trees, casting long, twisting shadows across the wooden floor.

Laura’s breath caught in her throat. She stared at the photo—at her sister’s weary, glowing eyes, and at her husband’s hand resting intimate and heavy on Mia’s pregnant abdomen. The world seemed to tilt beneath her feet.

"Daniel..." Laura’s voice was a frail whisper, fractured by betrayal and utter terror. "What is this? What have you done to my sister?"

Daniel’s face transformed. The composed, aggrieved stepfather vanished, replaced by a desperate, cornered man whose eyes darted toward the open doorway. "Laura, listen to me. It’s not what you think. She came to me. She was in trouble!"

"You lied to me!" Laura screamed, tears finally spilling over her trembling cheeks as she clutched her seven-month pregnant belly. "You told me she stole money and abandoned us! You let me grieve her for six months while you kept her hidden in our own backyard!"

Sergeant Ellis stepped subtly between Daniel and the family, her hand resting firmly on her holstered sidearm. Detective Elena Cruz took a step forward, her tone icy and uncompromising. "Mr. Miller, sit down and keep your hands where I can see them. Right now, a mother is bleeding out somewhere in this city. Where is Mia Bennett?"

Daniel swallowed hard, his skin pale beneath the dim lighting of the guesthouse lamp. "I don’t know! I swear to God, I don’t know where she went!"

"Don’t lie to us, Daniel!" Elena snapped, pointing to the photo. "You were keeping her here. You knew she was giving birth. Where did she go after she gave birth to that child?"

"She panicked!" Daniel yelled, his voice cracking with hysteria. "She gave birth right here on that bed four hours ago! I brought her towels, hot water, basic medicine... I told her we needed to go to the hospital, but she refused! She was terrified!"

"Terrified of what?" Laura sobbed. "Terrified of you?"

"No! Of them!" Daniel shouted, lowering his head into his hands. "Your parents, Laura! It wasn’t me who drove her away. It was your mother and father!"

The room fell into an eerie silence, broken only by the faint, rhythmic ticking of an old clock on the wall. Elena narrowed her eyes. "Explain. Now."

Daniel looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "Six months ago, Mia found out she was pregnant. She didn't want to tell your parents because... because she knew how they were. But when your father found out, he didn't just get angry. He threatened to lock her away in a private facility in upstate New York to avoid a family scandal. They took her phone, her money, her car. She escaped in the middle of the night and came to me because she had nowhere else to go."

"Why didn't you tell me?!" Laura cried out, her heart breaking. "I am her sister!"

"Because she was terrified you’d take your parents' side! Or that the stress would make you lose your baby!" Daniel looked at Laura with a mixture of guilt and desperation. "I hid her here to protect her. I brought her food. I bought prenatal vitamins. I was trying to figure out a way to get her out of the state safely once the baby was born."

Elena interjected, her sharp detective mind putting the pieces together. "If you were protecting her, why did she give the baby to an eight-year-old boy in the dead of night and flee?"

Noah, who had been standing silently near the door, clutched Sergeant Ellis's jacket. He looked up at his stepfather with eyes full of an ancient, heartbreaking wisdom. "Because Uncle Daniel said the baby couldn't stay here," Noah said softly. "He said if the baby stayed, the bad men would come."

Elena’s head snapped toward Daniel. "What bad men, Daniel?"

Before Daniel could answer, a sudden rustle of dry leaves echoed from the dense tree line beyond the backyard fence. Sergeant Ellis instantly drew her flashlight, shining a bright beam toward the dark bushes.

"Police! Who's there?" Ellis shouted.

A dark figure darted away through the woods. The chase was on.
