Chapter 3 - The Broken Thread

Detective Cruz didn't hesitate. "Ellis, secure the scene and keep Daniel Miller here! Do not let him leave!" She sprinted out of the guesthouse, her heavy boots crunching against the damp grass as she pursued the shadow disappearing into the neighborhood park behind the property.

The fog was thick, hanging over the grass like a ghostly shroud. Elena drew her service weapon, her lungs burning as she negotiated the dark treeline. "Stop! Police!"

The figure stumbled near an old wooden footbridge over a shallow creek. Elena closed the distance, her beam locking onto the fleeing suspect. The light caught a flash of disheveled dark hair, a oversized men's jacket, and bare feet stained with mud and drying blood.

It wasn't a threat. It was a victim.

"Mia!" Elena called out, softening her tone as she slowed her pace to avoid startling her. "Mia Bennett, stop! Please! Your baby is safe!"

The figure froze at the edge of the creek. Mia turned around slowly, trembling so violently she could barely stand. Her face was deathly pale, her lips blue from the damp night cold. Sweat and rain glued her hair to her forehead, and a dark stain was spreading across the front of her sweatpants. She was bleeding heavily from the delivery.

"My... my baby?" Mia gasped, her voice barely a whisper. "Did Noah... did he make it?"

"Yes," Elena said gently, holstering her gun and raising her hands to show she was unarmed. "Noah brought her straight to the Westbridge Police Station. She’s at the hospital right now with Dr. Grant. She’s breathing, she’s warm, and she’s safe."

Mia let out a broken, shuddering sob and collapsed onto her knees in the mud. Elena rushed forward, catching the young woman before her head hit the damp earth. Mia’s skin was ice-cold to the touch, her pulse rapid and weak.

"You need a hospital, Mia. You're bleeding," Elena insisted, pressing her jacket against Mia’s abdomen to stem the hemorrhaging.

"No... no hospitals..." Mia whimpered, clutching Elena’s coat with white-knuckled fingers. "They'll find us. My father... he hired men to track me down. They watched the house tonight. That's why I had to leave!"

"Your father?" Elena pressed. "Richard Bennett?"

"He found out where I was hiding three days ago," Mia sobbed, tears cutting clean streaks through the mud on her cheeks. "He told Daniel that if I didn't give up the baby for adoption to an agency he chose, he’d ruin Daniel’s business and tell Laura that Daniel was having an affair with me. He was going to destroy everything!"

The dark truth was finally unraveling. Daniel hadn't been an accomplice in an affair; he was a coward caught in a vice, trapped between his powerful, controlling father-in-law and his instinct to help his pregnant sister-in-law.

"When I went into labor tonight," Mia whispered, her eyes beginning to roll back from blood loss, "I saw a black SUV parked down the street. I knew my father’s men were waiting for me to give birth so they could take my daughter away. I couldn't let them... I couldn't... So I woke up Noah..."

"Noah was so brave, Mia," Elena reassured her, signaling frantically over her radio for the paramedics to re-route to the park. "He carried her four blocks in his dinosaur pajamas. He protected her."

A faint, heartbreaking smile touched Mia’s pale lips. "He's a good boy... Tell Laura... I'm sorry..."

Mia’s eyes closed, and her head fell back against Elena’s arm. Her breathing slowed down to dangerous, shallow gasps.

"Mia! Stay with me!" Elena barked, pressing harder against the wound. "Dispatch, I need an ALS unit at the footbridge behind Maple Street NOW! Patient is unresponsive, severe postpartum hemorrhage!"

The siren wails echoed in the distance, cutting through the calm night air. But as Elena looked down at the unconscious girl, she realized that saving Mia’s life was only the beginning. The real monsters weren't hiding in the shadows of the guesthouse—they were sitting in high-rise offices, wielding power, wealth, and influence to tear a family apart.
