Chapter 6 - The Trial of Two Bloodlines

Before the guards could take a step toward us, a loud, metallic clang echoed from the second-story terrace of the west wing.

Everyone froze.

A figure stepped out into the rain on the balcony above us. He was a tall, thin man wearing a simple hospital gown, his long, dark hair soaked by the storm. Despite his frail appearance, he stood with a strange, striking dignity. His chest rose and fell with the same distinct, rhythmic double-beat that I had heard from my own baby's monitor.

"Leo..." Eleanor whispered, her face turning pale.

"I heard you, Mother," the man said, his voice deep, hollowed out by years of isolation, but filled with an undeniable, resonant strength. "I have heard you for thirty years. Telling me I was sick. Telling me I was dead. Telling me the world was too dangerous for me."

"Leo, go back inside," Eleanor commanded, her voice shaking for the first time. "You are not well. The cold air will kill you."

"The cold air is the first clean thing I have felt in three decades," Leo replied. He looked down at me, his eyes filled with a profound, intelligent warmth. "You must be Vivian. Dr. Joseph managed to get a message to me through one of the night nurses. You have my nephew."

"He has your heart, Leo," I said, my voice cracking with emotion. "He has your mutation. He is dying. I need your help to save him."

"No!" Julian screamed, stepping forward, his face twisted with a mixture of terror and jealousy. "He’s a ghost! He doesn't exist! I am the heir to the Vance fortune! I am the one who rebuilt the company!"

"You built it on a foundation of lies, Julian," Leo said, stepping toward the emergency staircase and slowly descending into the courtyard. The guards did not move to stop him; they looked bewildered, realizing the gravity of the family secret unfolding before them.

Leo reached the bottom of the stairs and stood before Eleanor. He was taller than Julian, his presence commanding despite his thin frame. "Your empire is over, Mother. The accounts are frozen. The truth is coming out. And I am going to save my nephew."

"You can't leave," Eleanor hissed, her eyes darting around like a trapped animal. "You are legally dead! You have no rights!"

"Actually, he does," Sarah intervened, stepping forward and holding up her phone, which was actively recording the entire interaction. "The federal marshals have just entered the facility's front gates. We didn't just bring ourselves, Eleanor. We brought the United States Attorney's Office."

Sirens began to wail in the distance, their blue and red lights reflecting off the wet pine trees.

Julian looked at his mother, panic completely overtaking him. "Mother, what do we do? Tell them to stop! Use your connections!"

But Eleanor Vance had no answers left. For the first time in her life, the grand matriarch of the Vance family looked small, defeated, and utterly powerless.
