Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Empire

The drive to the Adirondacks was a blur of pouring rain and flashing headlights. Sarah drove her SUV like a woman possessed, while I sat in the passenger seat, my laptop open on my lap, my fingers flying across the keyboard.

Using my old access credentials and the backdoor codes I had discovered in Julian's files, I began systematically dismantling the Vance financial empire.

"What are you doing?" Sarah asked, glancing over at the screen, which was filled with cascading rows of green data and financial ledgers.

"Eleanor Vance thinks her wealth makes her untouchable," I said, a cold resolve settling over me. "She thinks she can hoard the medicine that can save my son. So, I am cutting off her air supply."

I initiated a series of automated audits, flagging over forty suspicious offshore transfers directly to the Internal Revenue Service and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Within minutes, automated freeze alerts began popping up on the screen.

"I've just frozen the primary operating accounts for Vance Pharmaceuticals," I whispered. "By morning, they won't even have the liquid capital to pay their janitorial staff, let alone their legal defense. If they want their money back, they have to face me."

By midnight, we reached the gates of Whispering Pines. The sanitarium was a sprawling, gothic stone estate surrounded by towering iron fences and thick pine trees.

"How do we get in?" Sarah asked, pulling the SUV into the shadow of a thick oak tree near the perimeter wall.

"The facility uses an older electronic security system," I said, tapping a few keys on my laptop. "It’s managed by a local security firm that Julian’s company acquired two years ago. I still have the master administrative override."

With a single keystroke, the massive iron gates clicked and swung open silently.

We slipped through the rain-soaked gardens, heading toward the rear entrance. Dr. Joseph had provided us with the floor plans he had acquired during his brief time consulting for the facility years ago. Suite 4B was located in the secluded west wing, reserved for high-paying, "high-discretion" patients.

As we reached the heavy oak door of the west wing, a voice echoed from the darkness behind us.

"I must admit, Vivian, I underestimated you."

We spun around. Standing under a large black umbrella, flanked by two burly men in dark suits, was Eleanor Vance. Her silver hair was perfectly coiffed, her face a mask of cold, aristocratic disdain. Behind her, Julian stepped out of the shadows, looking disheveled and frantic.

"Mother, she frozen the accounts!" Julian hissed, his voice cracking with panic. "The board is calling emergency meetings! We’re ruined!"

"Be quiet, Julian," Eleanor snapped, not breaking eye contact with me. "Vivian is a clever girl. But she has made a fatal error. She came here herself."

Eleanor stepped closer, her heels clicking on the wet stone. "Did you really think you could steal my son's legacy? Julian is the heir. Leo is... an unfortunate mistake. A weak, sickly boy who was never meant to lead this family."

"Leo is your son, Eleanor!" I shouted over the sound of the rain. "You locked him away in a cage for thirty years just to keep your hold on a pile of money! And now you're willing to let your grandson die just to keep your secret!"

"A grandson born of a peasant like you is no grandson of mine," Eleanor said coldly. She signaled her men. "Take her laptop. And make sure she and her lawyer friend are escorted to a quiet place where we can discuss a... permanent settlement."
