Chapter 10 - The Dawn of a New Legacy

Three years later, the lawn of our Hudson River home was filled with laughter, music, and the delicious scent of a summer barbecue.
It was little Leo's fourth birthday.
The backyard was decorated with blue and gold balloons. Children from the local neighborhood, along with Sarah’s family and Dr. Joseph—who had retired from the public clinic to become the chief medical advisor for our foundation—were all gathered around a large wooden table.
"Make a wish, Leo!" the crowd cheered as a large chocolate cake was placed in front of my son.
Little Leo looked up at me, his eyes shining with happiness. He had the same crescent birthmark over his heart, but his chest beat with a steady, powerful rhythm that had never wavered since the day he received his medicine. He took a deep breath and blew out the candles in one big puff.
The crowd cheered, and Leo immediately reached out to swipe a finger full of frosting, putting it directly onto his nose, causing everyone to burst into laughter.
I stood back, watching the scene, a deep, overwhelming sense of gratitude filling my soul.
Leo Vance came up behind me, gently placing a hand on my shoulder. "You did it, Vivian. Look at him. He’s happy. He’s safe."
"We did it, Leo," I corrected, leaning my head slightly against his shoulder. Over the last three years, our bond had grown into something deeper, a quiet, profound love built on shared survival, mutual respect, and a shared devotion to the little boy who had brought us together.
I looked down at my hands. They were no longer trembling. They were no longer red and raw from scrubbing floors in the dark. They were strong, capable, and held the future of a legacy that was finally built on love, truth, and compassion.
My phone in my pocket buzzed quietly. It was an automated notification from the foundation’s medical research team. “Phase 1 clinical trials for the new, free pediatric cardiac regulator have been approved.”

I smiled, slipping the phone back into my pocket.
The past was a closed book, its pages burned to ashes. The future was bright, wide open, and entirely ours to write. And as I watched my son laugh, surrounded by the people who loved him, I knew that the best chapters of our lives were only just beginning.
