Chapter 2 - The Stolen Miracle

The heavy door of the delivery room clicked shut behind Julian, sealing out the sterile hum of the hospital corridor. He wore a charcoal-grey tailored suit, immaculate and entirely out of place in a room smelling of antiseptic, sweat, and new life. He looked down at me, his smile a polished veneer of superficial warmth that did not reach his cold, calculating eyes.

"Vivian," he said, his voice smooth, dripping with artificial pity. "You look absolutely dreadful."

I tried to sit up, but a sharp wave of exhaustion and pain pinned me to the thin mattress. My hands clamped onto the metal guardrails of the bed. "What are you doing here, Julian? You made it very clear I was no longer your responsibility."

"And you aren't," he replied, taking a step closer. He didn't look at me; his eyes were locked entirely on the bundle in the doctor's trembling hands. "But my son is. A Vance heir does not begin his life in a municipal hospital room paid for by state aid. I came to collect what belongs to my family."

"He is my son," I rasped, my throat raw. "Get out."

The doctor, Dr. Joseph, had still not stopped staring at the baby. The tears on his cheeks were dry now, replaced by a profound, haunting bewilderment. He didn’t seem to hear our bickering. His gaze darted from the baby's tiny face to Julian, then back down.

"Dr. Joseph?" Julian’s voice lost a fraction of its smooth confidence, replaced by an demanding edge. "Give me the boy. My legal team is already downstairs with the emergency custody injunction. Vivian is unfit, and we both know it."

Dr. Joseph took a step back, shielding the baby with his body. "No," he whispered, his voice shaking.

Julian’s brow furrowed. "Excuse me?"

"This... this is not possible," Dr. Joseph breathed, his eyes wide. He looked at Julian as if looking at a dead man walking. "Mr. Vance... do you know who I am?"

Julian sneered, glancing at the doctor's name tag. "Should I? I don’t keep track of the staff at second-rate public clinics."

"My name is Arthur Joseph," the doctor said, his voice growing stronger, laced with an old, deep-seated grief. "Thirty-two years ago, I was a resident at St. Jude’s Private Hospital. I was the attending physician who delivered you, Julian. And I was also the doctor who delivered your older brother, Leo."

A sudden, suffocating silence fell over the room.

Julian’s posture stiffened. "My brother died in the incubator three days after birth. My mother told me the story. What does that have to do with anything?"

"Your brother Leo didn't die of natural causes, Julian. He had a very specific, incredibly rare genetic mutation," Dr. Joseph said, his hands trembling as he gently pulled back the receiving blanket to reveal the baby’s chest.

Directly over the baby’s heart was a distinct, crescent-shaped birthmark, pigmented in a deep, striking violet-blue. But it wasn't just the birthmark. The baby's skin had a subtle, translucent quality, and as he breathed, his chest rose and fell with a peculiar, rhythmic double-beat—a rare cardiovascular anomaly known to exist in only one maternal bloodline in the entire region.

"Leo Vance had this exact cardiovascular structure. A double-chambered atrial node," Dr. Joseph whispered, tears welling up again. "It is a genetic signature so rare it occurs in one in ten million births. It is highly lethal unless treated immediately with a specific synthetic enzyme. When Leo died, your mother, Eleanor, threatened to ruin my life, claiming I killed him. She forced me out of private practice. But before Leo passed, we mapped his DNA. Julian... this baby has the exact same double-chambered node. But that is not why I am crying."

Dr. Joseph looked at me, his eyes filled with a terrifying awe.

"This mutation is an active, dominant trait passed down only through the maternal line. Julian, you do not carry this gene. You could never pass it on. But Vivian... your medical history shows no such lineage. The only way this child could have this exact, highly specific mutation..."

Dr. Joseph swallowed hard, looking at Julian. "Is if this child is not yours, Julian. But he is a Vance. Because thirty-two years ago, Eleanor Vance didn't lose her first son, Leo. I suspect... she hid him. And this baby’s DNA matches a genetic profile that can only exist if his biological father is the long-lost Leo Vance."

The room spun. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

"What absolute nonsense!" Julian snarled, his face contorting with rage. "You're a senile old fool! Vivian slept around, we all know it! She’s trying to set up a scam!"

"I am not senile, Mr. Vance," Dr. Joseph said, his voice hardening. "And I kept the records. I kept Leo's DNA profile because I knew Eleanor was lying about his death. I knew she had smuggled the baby out of the hospital to protect the Vance estate from a massive family scandal regarding his true paternity. If this child has this mutation, his father is Leo. And if Leo is alive..."

Julian lunged forward to grab the baby, but the delivery room doors burst open.

Two hospital security guards, flanked by a tall, sharply dressed woman in a navy blue suit, stepped inside. The woman was Sarah Jenkins, my former mentor from the audit firm—and one of the most feared litigation attorneys in the state.

"Step away from the mother and child, Julian," Sarah said, her voice like cracking ice. "The police are already on their way. And we have a few things to discuss."
