Chapter 6 - The Trial and the Reckoning
Six months later, the federal trial of Derek Vance and his associates began. Because of the overwhelming digital evidence provided by the federal task force and the clear video footage recorded on both the house security system and my phone, the defense was completely helpless.
In court, Derek looked broken. The expensive suits were gone, replaced by an orange jumpsuit. His brother Mason had already taken a plea bargain, testifying against Derek to reduce his own sentence for obstruction and complicity.
When Emily took the witness stand, she did so with her head held high. She detailed every incident of abuse, every threat, and the exact events of Christmas night. Her testimony was calm, powerful, and undeniable.
When the judge asked if the defense had any cross-examination, Derek’s lawyer simply shook his head and sat down.
The jury deliberated for less than two hours.
Derek Vance was found guilty on all charges: grand felony domestic assault, federal money laundering, conspiracy to defraud the United States government, and obstruction of justice. The judge sentenced him to twenty-eight years in a federal maximum-security prison without the possibility of early parole.
