Chapter 3 - The Federal Intrusion

"Federal agents! Don't move! Hands where we can see them!"
Armed officers in tactical gear flooded the foyer, weapon lights cutting through the warm holiday lighting. Behind them walked a tall man in a dark trench coat, his hair peppered with gray, carrying an air of absolute authority.
Calder.
My former partner looked around the room, taking in the scene instantly—the knocked-over Christmas tree, Emily holding her face on the floor, Derek staring in paralyzed shock, and me standing in the center.
"Thomas," Calder said, stepping forward and extending a hand. "It's been too long."
"Calder," I replied, shaking his hand firmly. "Thank you for coming so quickly."
"You used the emergency protocol," Calder said, turning his piercing gaze toward Derek. "Which means this isn't just a simple domestic call. What do we have?"
"Agent Calder, wait!" Grant stepped forward, his voice trembling with a mix of anger and fear. "This is a massive violation of rights! I am Grant Vance, chairman of the—"
"I don't care if you're the Governor, sir," Calder interrupted, pulling a signed federal warrant from his jacket and holding it up. "We've had a wiretap and digital surveillance on your son's network for six months. We were waiting for a physical trigger to seize the physical cold-storage drives. Your son just attempted to execute a remote wipe sequence from his mobile device. That attempt pinged our server directly and authorized an immediate tactical breach."
Derek’s phone slipped from his trembling hands, clattering against the floor. "W-what? Surveillance? On me?"
"You thought you were clever, Derek," I said, taking a step toward him. "You thought you were just stealing corporate secrets. But you didn't just steal data from Vanguard Logistics. You were laundering offshore accounts for international cartel entities. And you were using my daughter's name on the shell corporations to shield yourself."
Emily gasped, looking up at me in horror. "Dad... what?"
"I checked your tax filings last month, sweetheart," I said softly, kneeling back down to comfort her. "I saw signatures that weren't yours. I knew Derek was digging a hole, but I needed the federal team to trace the primary keys before we moved. Tonight, when he struck you, he proved not only his criminality, but his complete lack of humanity."
Mason backed away toward the kitchen, attempting to slide toward the rear exit, but two tactical officers seized him by the arms, slamming him against the counter and securing him in zip-ties.
"Hey! I didn't do anything!" Mason screamed. "I was just watching!"
"Complicity in felony assault and obstruction of justice," Calder said calmly. "Take him out."

"Lorraine, do something!" Grant yelled as his youngest son was dragged into the snow.
Lorraine began to weep hysterically, clutching her husband's arm as the reality of their family's total collapse set in. The illusion of their perfect, respectable life had shattered in less than fifteen minutes.
