Chapter 5 - Exposing the Accomplices

The investigation did not stop at Derek. Over the next forty-eight hours, the raid on the Vance residence triggered a cascading series of arrests across the state.

Grant Vance’s corrupt ties to local law enforcement and municipal boards were fully exposed when federal agents decrypted the secondary drives found in the house. Grant had been taking kickbacks to approve fraudulent zoning permits for Vanguard Logistics’ illegal storage facilities. By Boxing Day, Grant was stripped of his position and formally indicted on federal bribery and racketeering charges.

Lorraine, who had spent years turning a blind eye to her son’s violence and illegal activities while benefiting from the dirty money, found herself named as a co-conspirator in laundering operations. The wealthy socialite life she had built was torn down completely; the bank accounts were frozen, and the grand estate was placed under federal seizure.

I stayed by Emily’s bedside at the hospital throughout those grueling days. As the physical wounds began to heal, the emotional weight of years of domestic captivity began to lift from her shoulders.

"Dad," she asked one evening, watching the snow fall outside her hospital room window. "How did you know? I thought I hid it so well. I wore long sleeves, I made excuses for every bruise..."
