Chapter 8 - The Town Hall Showdown

At 7:45 PM, the Oakridge Community Center was packed to absolute capacity. Diana Harrington had called an emergency mandatory homeowners meeting, ostensibly to "address the delinquent status of Sheriff Ramirez’s property and vote on the immediate community takeover of his estate."
Inside the brightly lit hall, residents sat in uncomfortable silence on folding chairs. Whispers rippled through the crowd. Everyone knew about the news vans, the rumors of corruption, and the terrifying incident on my porch, but most people were too intimidated by Diana and her husband to speak out.
Diana stood at the podium on the elevated stage, wearing another immaculate outfit, looking entirely composed and smug. Beside her stood her husband, Richard, a slick-haired man in an expensive gray suit, tapping impatiently on a laptop. In the front row sat Magistrate Vance, crossing his legs with an air of absolute judicial immunity.
"Order! Order in the community hall!" Diana demanded, tapping her gavel sharply against the wooden block.
The room quieted down instantly.
"As you all know by now," Diana began, her voice dripping with practiced self-righteousness, "our community has been threatened from within by those who believe their badges place them above the law. Sheriff Ramirez has defied community standards, endangered our collective property values, and resisted lawful enforcement. Tonight, we are voting to officially authorize the emergency foreclosure and seizure of his property."
She paused, expecting applause or at least nodding agreement from the intimidated crowd. Instead, the room remained dead silent.
Diana frowned, scanning the crowd. "All in favor, raise—"
CLANG.
The heavy double doors at the back of the community center flew open with a resounding crash that rattled the windows.
All heads whipped around.

Standing in the doorway was Agent Miller of the FBI, flanked by four heavily armed federal agents in tactical gear. And right behind them, stepping into the bright overhead lights of the hall, was me—wearing my full sheriff's uniform, my badge gleaming proudly on my chest, my duty belt secured firmly at my waist.
A collective gasp sucked all the air out of the room.
