Chapter 2 - The Choice of a Father and a Lawman

The metal shackle offered no resistance once my full weight came down on the handles of the bolt cutters. With a sharp crack, the brass padlock shattered into pieces, clattering against the concrete steps.
I didn't waste a single second looking at Diana. I dropped the heavy tool, fell to my knees, and unwrapped the biting steel chain from Emma’s small, burning waist. Her body felt uncomfortably hot to the touch, her breathing shallow and ragged.
"I've got you, sweetheart. Just stay with me," I whispered, scooping her weightless, feverish body into my arms.
The heart monitor continued its frantic, piercing shriek. I kicked open our front door, rushed inside, and immediately cranked the central air conditioning down while laying her gently on the living room couch. I grabbed her emergency medical bag from the shelf, administering her prescribed cooling medication and oxygen mask. Slowly, mercifully, the high-pitched alarm of the monitor began to soften, transitioning into a steady, rhythmic beep. Her pulse rate started to normalize.
Outside, the click of heels signaled that Diana hadn't left.
When I stepped back onto the porch, my eyes locked onto her with a dead, terrifying coldness that made even someone as arrogant as Diana take half a step back.
"You are trespassing on my property, and you have committed aggravated child endangerment," I said, my voice dangerously low, stripped of all warmth.
Diana crossed her arms, sniffing dismissively. "Oh, please, Sheriff. Don't pull rank on me. Section 14, Paragraph C of the Oakridge Covenant clearly states that unauthorized minors roaming common areas unattended can be secured until authorities arrive. You were late coming home from your shift. Someone had to enforce order."
"She was sitting on our private front porch, Diana," I snarled, stepping down off the porch toward her. "Not a common area. Our porch."
"Your porch extends past the property line landscaping boundary according to the master architectural map," she snapped back, tapping her clipboard. "Furthermore, that medical device of hers emits a low-frequency hum that disturbs the HOA's designated quiet hours. Consider this a formal warning."
Mrs. Gable, still peering over the hedges, couldn't stay silent any longer. "You're a monster, Diana! The poor little girl could have died out here in this heat!"
May you like
Diana shot Mrs. Gable a venomous glare. "Mind your own business, Martha, or you'll be receiving another fine for unkempt shrubbery. And as for you, Sheriff..." Diana looked me dead in the eye, smiling a chilling, shark-like smile. "I've already filed an emergency injunction with the county magistrate. Your property has accumulated over four thousand dollars in unpaid fines this month alone. If you don't pay by Friday, the HOA will foreclose on your home."
She turned on her heel and walked away, completely unfazed, leaving me standing in the stifling heat with my badge, my fury, and a terrifying realization: this woman wasn't just a petty tyrant. She was systematically targeting my family.
