Chapter 7 - A Daughter’s Smile and Renewed Strength

Late that afternoon, I returned to the county hospital. Emma was sitting up in bed, nibbling on a hospital-provided gelatin cup and coloring in a superhero coloring book with a pack of crayons.
When the door opened and I walked in wearing civilian clothes, her face lit up with that bright, infectious smile that made every hardship in my life worthwhile.
"Daddy!" she cheered, tossing her crayons aside and holding her arms out for a hug.
I rushed over, lifting her carefully into my arms and burying my face in her soft hair. I held her tight, letting out a breath I felt like I'd been holding since I first saw her chained to that porch.
"How are you feeling, sweet pea?" I asked, pulling back to look into her big, expressive eyes.
" Much better," she chirped. "The doctor says my heart monitor is behaving itself. And Mrs. Gable brought me chocolate pudding earlier!"
I chuckled, kissing her cheek. "Did she now? Well, Mrs. Gable is a very special friend."
Emma looked down at her coloring book, her expression turning slightly serious. "Daddy... are we going to lose our house? The lady with the clipboard said we had to leave because we broke the rules."
I took her small hands in mine, looking straight into her eyes with absolute conviction.
"Listen to me, Emma," I said gently. "We are never losing our home. People who try to bully others and hurt innocent people always think they're invincible until the truth catches up with them. And tonight, the truth is catching up in a very big way."

Emma smiled, tilting her head. "Are you going to be the hero, Daddy?"
"We're all going to be okay, baby," I replied, squeezing her hand. "Now, you rest up. I have some unfinished business to take care of in the neighborhood."
