Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

Morning broke over the city, washing the skyline in cold, metallic light. But inside room 214 of St. Jude’s Hospital, the light felt dimmer, swallowed by the relentless hum of medical machinery.

Adrian stood beside Sienna’s bed, holding a warm cup of black coffee he hadn't touched. The girls were at the penthouse under the panicked supervision of Marcus, who had reluctantly traded corporate spreadsheets for nursery duty. Adrian had refused to leave Sienna's side for long, spending the early morning hours reviewing reports sent by top-tier cardiologists he had mobilized from across the globe.

Sienna’s eyes fluttered open as the morning sun hit her face. She looked weaker than yesterday; the amber in her eyes seemed faded, like old parchment left out in the sun.

"You look tired, Adrian," she whispered, a faint, teasing ghost of a smile playing on her lips. "Corporate titans aren't supposed to get dark circles under their eyes."

"Shut up," Adrian murmured, pulling a chair closer to the bed and sitting down. He set the coffee aside and reached out, his large hand gently wrapping around her cold, frail fingers. "I didn't sleep. I was busy rewriting your daughters' entire life plan."

Sienna let out a soft, breathy laugh that quickly turned into a sharp cough. Adrian immediately reached for a glass of water, helping her take a small sip before settling her back against the pillows.

"They're incredible, aren't they?" Sienna whispered, her gaze drifting toward the window as if she could see all the way back to the penthouse. "I tried so hard to protect them from the world... and from the memory of a father who didn't want them."

"I was a fool, Sienna," Adrian said, his voice dropping low, rough with an agony he had kept buried for years. "I was a blind, arrogant fool. I thought building an empire meant everything. But standing there in the corridor yesterday, looking at six eyes that looked exactly like mine... I realized I had built a prison."

Sienna turned her head, her amber eyes locking onto his with a fierce, unwavering intensity. "You didn't know, Adrian. And neither did I... not until it was too late."

"It's not too late," Adrian insisted, his grip tightening around her hand. "I brought the best medical team in the world to this city. They're reviewing your file right now. We're going to get you into surgery, fix your heart, and you're going to watch Clara, Chloe, and Cora grow up right beside me."

Sienna shook her head slowly, a heartbreaking serenity washing over her features. "My heart has fought its battle, Adrian. The doctors didn't tell you everything last night. There's calcification of the mitral valve, advanced pulmonary hypertension... my body is tired. It's time."

"No!" Adrian slammed his free hand down on the mattress, the sound sharp and desperate in the quiet room. "Don't talk like that! You survived seven years on your own, you can survive this! I won't let you give up!"

Before Sienna could answer, the door burst open.

It wasn't a nurse. It was Marcus, panting heavily, holding a thick manila folder in one hand and his tablet in the other. His face was pale, his eyes wide with genuine panic.

Adrian stood up instantly, stepping between Marcus and the bed to shield Sienna. "Marcus? What is the meaning of this? I told you not to leave the girls."

"Sir," Marcus gasped, trying to catch his breath. "The girls are fine. They're eating pancakes with Mrs. Gable. But... but you have a visitor. A very unwelcome visitor."

Adrian’s brow furrowed, a dark, dangerous shadow crossing his features. "Who?"

Marcus swallowed hard, stepping aside as heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed from the hallway outside.

"Your father, sir. Arthur Cole."
