Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Past

The transition from the hospital to Adrian’s penthouse was not a journey; it was a seismic shift in reality.

For seven years, the top floor of the Cole Tower had been a sanctuary of minimalist perfection. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic, emotionless view of the city skyline. The furniture was sleek, monochromatic leather and brushed steel. There were no stray items, no clutter, no life. It was a space designed to reflect the mind of its owner: cold, efficient, untouchable.

Now, it looked like a hurricane had hit a toy store.

"Careful with that, Chloe," Adrian said, his voice tight as the six-year-old spun around near an original minimalist sculpture that had cost more than most people's houses.

"It's pointy!" Chloe chirped, not slowing down in the slightest.

"It's art," Adrian sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose.

Clara was already exploring the kitchen island, her eyes wide as she inspected the state-of-the-art espresso machine. Cora sat quietly on the edge of the stark white sofa, her black notebook open on her lap, sketching the towering chrome pillars of the living room.

Adrian stood in the center of the room, feeling like a stranger in his own home. His phone buzzed relentlessly in his pocket — board members demanding updates, mergers waiting for signatures, legal teams asking for clearance. He silenced the device with a flick of his thumb and dropped it onto the kitchen counter. For the first time in his career, he didn't care.

His mind was back at the hospital, where Sienna lay tethered to machines while nurses hovered like silent angels. The doctors had given him a grim reality check outside her room: her heart was failing due to a rare congenital condition exacerbated by years of stress and single motherhood. She had hidden it, pushing herself past the brink of endurance to ensure her daughters were provided for before the end.

And now, Adrian was responsible for them. Them. Three little girls who possessed his eyes and her fire.

"Mr. Cole?"

Adrian snapped out of his thoughts. It was Cora. She had walked over silently, standing a few feet away with her notebook clutched in her hands.

"You can call me Adrian, or... well, Dad, if you want," he said, wincing slightly at the unfamiliar word. "Or whatever you're comfortable with."

Cora tilted her head, her grey-blue eyes studying him with unsettling maturity. "Mama said you were a dragon who lived in a tower of glass."

Adrian let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Your mother wasn't wrong. But dragons can change their caves, right?"

"Dragons hoard things," Cora said softly, looking around the stark, empty-feeling apartment. "You didn't hoard anything. You have too much space and not enough things that look like people live here."

Before Adrian could process the philosophical gut-punch delivered by a six-year-old, the front private elevator chimed. The doors slid open to reveal Marcus, Adrian’s fiercely loyal, hyper-competent chief of staff, holding a massive stack of folders and a tablet.

Marcus stepped into the penthouse, took one look at the pink hair ribbons on the white leather sofa, the crayons scattered near the minimalist coffee table, and froze. His jaw dropped an inch. He looked at Adrian, then at Clara who was waving cheerfully at him from the kitchen, and finally back to Adrian.

"Sir," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "Did your penthouse get invaded by a kindergarten?"

"Marcus," Adrian said, his tone flat, warning his assistant not to overstep. "Meet Clara, Chloe, and Cora."

Marcus blinked rapidly, adjusting his glasses. "The... the triplet daughters of Ms. Hart. The ones that... wait. You have children, sir? Since when?"

"Since seven years ago, apparently," Adrian muttered, walking over to the kitchen island and picking up his silenced phone. "Marcus, drop the paperwork. We have new priorities."

Marcus stared at him, bewildered. "Sir, the Vanguard acquisition is tomorrow morning. If you don't sign—"

"Postpone it," Adrian cut him off, his voice carrying the absolute, chilling authority that had built his empire. "Cancel everything for the next month. Clear my entire schedule."

Marcus looked like he was about to faint. "Cancel the Vanguard merger? Sir, the board will revolt!"

May you like

"Let them," Adrian said coldly, turning his gaze back toward the three girls. Clara was trying to balance a plastic cup on her head, Chloe was giggling, and Cora was quietly watching him with her steady, ancient eyes.

Adrian felt a strange, terrifying warmth bloom in his chest — a fragile ember of protectiveness that he had locked away a lifetime ago. He wasn't just a CEO anymore. He was a father. And he would tear down every corporate empire in the world before he let anyone take these girls away.
