Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

The lobby of the Grand Regent became deathly quiet. A few passing guests stopped to watch, sensing the immense shift in gravity. Richard’s eyes darted from Ethan to the two receptionists, his mind desperately trying to connect the dots.

"Sir... I don't understand," Richard stammered, sweat breaking out along his forehead.

"Let me help you understand," Ethan said, stepping closer to the desk. He placed his hands flat on the polished marble, looking directly into Patricia’s terrified eyes. "Last night, I walked into this hotel with my daughter sleeping in my arms. I had a valid corporate reservation. This woman, Patricia, told me to look for a cheap motel near the highway because of how I was dressed."

Richard gasped, turning on Patricia with absolute fury. "You did what?! Are you completely insane?!"

"And this woman, Karla," Ethan continued, his voice unwavering, "laughed in my face. She told me that people like me think they can just demand suites. And earlier today, she threatened to have me evicted from the property because my casual clothing was 'making high-profile guests uncomfortable.'"

"Mr. Vance, please!" Karla cried out, tears spilling over her cheeks. "We didn't know! We swear we didn't know who you were! The system... the system didn't show your title!"

"That is exactly the point," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You didn't know who I was. So, you assumed I was a nobody. You assumed I had no power, no money, and no voice. And because you thought I was defenseless, you chose to be cruel."

He turned his gaze to Richard. "And you, Richard. You manage this hotel like a prison camp. You terrify your staff. You threaten a woman like Lupita—a woman who has given ten years of her life to this property—because she cared more about a tired child than a corporate timeline. You created a culture where arrogance flows from the top down. If the General Manager treats his staff like trash, the staff will treat the guests like trash."

Richard fell to his knees, completely stripped of his pride. "Mr. Vance, please. It was an oversight. A terrible mistake. I have increased profits by fifteen percent this quarter! I can fix this, I swear!"

"Profits mean nothing if the soul of the company is rotten, Richard," Ethan said coldly. "Vance Hospitality was built on a promise I made to my late wife. A promise that we would build places where people felt safe, welcomed, and loved when they were far from home. You turned my dream into a hollow corporate machine."

Ethan looked at Arthur. "Arthur, execute the immediate termination of Richard, Patricia, and Karla. They are banned from entering any Vance Hospitality property globally. Their termination letters will list gross misconduct and violation of core corporate ethics. There will be no severance."

"Right away, Ethan," Arthur said, pulling out his tablet and signaling the security team standing nearby.

Patricia collapsed into her chair, sobbing openly, while Karla stood frozen in a state of absolute shock as two large security guards stepped forward to escort them out of the building. Richard hung his head, his career ruined in a single, devastating moment.

Ethan didn't watch them leave. He turned around, looking down at Lily, who was watching him with wide, curious eyes.

"Are you done working, Daddy?" she asked softly.

Ethan knelt down, a warm, genuine smile breaking through his stern demeanor. He kissed her cheek. "Yes, sweetheart. The hard part is done. Now, we have some people to thank."
