Chapter 4 - The Unseen Auditor

The morning sun broke over Lake Michigan, casting long, golden fingers of light across the floor of Suite 904. Lily woke up with the boundless energy unique to six-year-olds, completely oblivious to the drama of the night before.

"Daddy! Look at the big buildings!" she squealed, pressing her nose against the glass window.

Ethan smiled, joining her and wrapping his arms around her small shoulders. "They're big, aren't they? Just like the ones Mommy used to draw."

"Can we go see the flowers?" Lily asked, turning around. Her eyes caught the crystal vase on the table. She ran over, her small hands gently touching the bruised red petals. "They look a little sad, Daddy."

"They're just tired from the airplane, Lily," Ethan said softly, kneeling beside her. "But look closely. They're still standing straight. They're strong."

Lily smiled, kissing one of the petals. "Happy anniversary, Mommy," she whispered into the room.

After a quiet breakfast delivered to the room by a polite room-service attendant who had no idea who Ethan was, Ethan prepared for the day. He dressed in a simple, casual gray sweater and dark jeans. He didn't wear his bespoke suits or his expensive watch. He needed to remain invisible.

He had arranged for a trusted, bonded nanny from a premium local agency—vetted thoroughly by Arthur—to watch Lily in the suite for the afternoon. Once Lily was settled with her coloring books and her favorite cartoons, Ethan slipped out of the room.

Instead of taking the guest elevator, Ethan took the service stairs down to the basement levels. This was where the real heart of the hotel beat. It was a labyrinth of concrete corridors, roaring commercial laundry machines, and the clattering of the kitchen prep staff.

He walked past the laundry department, watching the workers sweat under the heavy steam. Most looked exhausted, their heads down. Nobody noticed the man in the gray sweater walking through, observing the lack of proper ventilation and the broken breakroom vending machines.

As he neared the main housekeeping dispatch office, he heard a sharp, familiar voice.

"I don't care about your excuses, Lupita. The executive floor needs to be completed two hours early today because of the gala VIPs. If you can't handle the workload, I can easily find someone who can."

Ethan paused around the corner. Peeking slightly, he saw a man in a tailored suit—Richard, the General Manager—standing over Lupita. Lupita looked tired, her shoulders slightly slumped, but her gaze remained steady.

"Mr. Richard, two of our girls called in sick today," Lupita said, her voice strained but polite. "We are already running at double capacity. To finish the floor early means we have to rush, and the quality will suffer."

"I don't care about the girls who called in sick," Richard snapped, flicking a speck of dust off his expensive watch. "I care about the impression this hotel makes tonight. The CEO of Vance Hospitality might be watching. If I see a single smudge or a delayed room turn, it's your job on the line. Do you understand me?"

Lupita swallowed her pride, nodding slowly. "Yes, Mr. Richard. We will do our best."

Richard scoffed, turning on his heel and walking away toward the executive elevators.

Ethan stepped out from the shadows, his blood boiling. He had hired Richard three years ago based on a stellar resume from a luxury European hotel chain. On paper, Richard was a savior of profit margins. In reality, he was a tyrant who managed through fear and intimidation.

"He doesn't speak to people very well, does he?" Ethan said quietly, stepping into the dispatch area.

Lupita startled, turning around. It took her a moment to recognize the father from the night before without the sleeping child and the old leather jacket. Her expression softened instantly.

"Oh! Hello, sir," she said, looking around nervously to ensure Richard was truly gone. "You shouldn't be down here. This is a staff-only area."

"I got a bit lost looking for the fitness center," Ethan lied smoothly, offering a warm smile. "But I couldn't help but hear. Is he always like that?"

Lupita sighed, picking up a clipboard. "Mr. Richard is... very focused on results, sir. He doesn't like excuses. But please, don't say anything. I need this job. My grandson needs his medicine, and this hotel pays better than most."

Ethan’s heart ached. This woman, who had defended his daughter’s right to a bed the night before at the risk of her own employment, was living in daily fear of a man who didn't even know how to clean a room.

"Don't worry, Lupita," Ethan said, his voice carrying a hidden promise. "Your job is safe. In fact, I have a feeling things around here are about to change very, very soon."
